Dear Friends of Sleeping Giant,

With all the recent snowfall it seems like a good time to remind everyone about uphill accessibility.

Our insurance provider does not allow us to condone back country skiing or skiing of any type when we are not fully operational. They have also requested that we post no trespassing signs on our structures to discourage people from trying to enter them. We do however recognize that our National Forest belongs to all Americans and is there to be enjoyed.

We have had several small snow slides over the last couple of weeks, and while we are grooming our service roads to maintain emergency access to our lift shacks and for regular maintenance, we would like to warn everyone that we have not groomed our trails and assume that the snowpack is highly unstable. We recommend to anyone recreating anywhere in Shoshone National Forest to use extreme caution and follow all winter safety guidelines for activities in the back country. For more details or guidance, we recommend contacting Shoshone National Forest’s Wapiti District Office in Cody at 307-527-6241.

Please also note that Sleeping Giant Employees are conducting regular maintenance on the mountain, and they reserve the right to ask anyone to leave the territory of our lease for any reason, especially if it interferes with their ability to work. Failure to follow their instructions could lead to legal consequences.

Additionally, this week we had some unknown individuals break the lock off one of our lift shacks and try to turn on one of our lifts. We reported this incident to the Cody Police Department and are currently accessing the damage. We are also repositioning our security cameras and will prosecute anyone that harms our property or equipment to the fullest extent of the law.

Using our public lands is a privilege and a responsibility and we hope everyone will recreate responsibly.

Dear Friends,

We are excited to announce that Sleeping Giant is partnering up with our friends at the Beta Coffee House in Cody to encourage everyone to vote this election season. From today until close on November 5th the Beta will be offering one free house coffee to anyone that comes in wearing their “I Voted Today’ sticker.

Taking part in elections is critical to the proper functioning of our democracy, and after such abysmal turn out in the primaries we wanted to do our part as community members to get everyone out to vote.

The Beta is located on main street in Cody just across from the Scout Inn and is open Tuesday-Saturday 7:00 am to 2:00 pm (Closes at 1pm on Saturdays).

Their breakfast burritos are also some of the best in Park County.

There is nothing is more patriotic than voting 🇺🇸

Dear Friends of Sleeping Giant,

We are sad to announce that we have made the decision to not open for the 24/25 Winter Season.

We recognize that this will be a huge disappointment for many in our community and we share that sentiment, however after speaking with staff we feel this is the most responsible choice.

As you know we faced a lack of snow last winter, a small flood this spring, and most recently vandalism to our Big Horn lift in August involving the brand-new communication line that we purchased for it the previous year. None of these problems are insurmountable, but taken together with the need to hire many seasonal staff made it clear that rushing to try to get open for the season did not make sense.

Instead, we will use this time to focus on repairs and improvements at the mountain. This will include interior repairs and upgrades to the lodge where we are considering plans to change the layout of the rental shop and ski patrol rooms. Additionally, we plan to focus on additional training for our staff. A couple of key members of our team will likely be attending Resort Management Training focused on the ski industry put on by a major West Coast University, and we will be training up our new outdoor maintenance team on the lifts and snow cats. Ownership will also be focused on furthering discussions with several potential strategic partners for the mountain’s long-term development.

We will be refunding all season passholders who rolled their passes over to the 24/25 winter season. Please watch your emails that are linked to your season pass account. We will be sending an email confirming your mailing address and mailing out refund checks after addresses are confirmed. A follow up email will then be sent when the checks are sent out. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Jonathan at [email protected].

Additionally, if you received a gift pass from SG ownership or a gift pass as part of a donation from Sleeping Giant those passes will rollover to our next winter season 25/26.

We have also been in touch with the Park County Travel Council regarding the grant we received from them that helped fund some of our trail expansion and the tubing park. We let them know that we are prepared to return these funds if they are not comfortable providing us with a one year window to get reopened.

We would also like to thank our friends at the Shoshone National Forest Service. We are grateful for your help and support during this time; we couldn’t ask for a better landlord. We would also like to thank our neighbors at Red Lodge who have told us they are ready to work with any employees of SG seeking employment this winter. Please reach out to Jonathan if you would like our support or recommendation at Red Lodge. One of the really good things to come out of this unfortunate turn of events at SG is our new relationship with Red Lodge. We are hopeful to launch some joint pass programs with them in 25/26.

We are proud of our work at Sleeping Giant and the large number of improvements we have made since taking it over. While we are gutted to be out of play this winter, we are looking toward the future with optimism. Thank you to everyone who has supported us over the last few months. It is at these times that we remember why we decided to take a chance and try to wrangle a Giant.

Sincerely,

Sleeping Giant Ownership & Staff

Dear Friends,

As the political season heats up in Park County Yulia and I want to take a minute to say a few words about our friend Matt Hall. I have been lucky enough to know Matt and his family since about second grade. I got to know Matt having been wrestling teammates with his brother Bryant Hall throughout our school years and especially our years at CHS spending quite a bit of time with him and his family. Before I could drive it was Matt who took us to drive-in movies or just about anywhere else we needed/wanted to go in his beat up Volkswagen Fox convertible – which at the time I thought was the coolest car in the whole world.

Later in life when my family and I returned to Cody on a more full time basis during Covid, Matt was a great guide and advisor as we went through the process of resettling our family in Cody and getting reacquainted with Park County

As Matt embarks on the next stage of his political career, my wife Yulia and I want to say a few words about him as a professional and why we think he is the best fit for the HD 24 seat. Over the past few years as Yulia and I began working and investing in Park County, we have had the chance to observe how Matt works. The time and energy he puts into being Cody’s mayor is pretty incredible. His door is always open and he is constantly in touch with constituents. In fact, I would venture to say there isn’t anybody in Park County who can’t count the Mayor of Cody as a friend. Matt always seeks to build consensus before making decisions and has shown repeatedly that he is willing to work with anyone to find solutions to problems we face in Park County. Park County is close to Matt’s heart; he takes his professional responsibilities seriously. In conversations with him I am often struck by the number of times Matt uses the word responsibility when talking about work. This understanding of what comes with being in public service makes Matt a great leader. In these times when the easiest thing to do is shout political gibberish online and pretend that you have all the answers, Matt is willing to dig into complicated situations, digest them, and find compromise that will hopefully serve the public best. Additionally when you look at the time Matt has put into building relationships in Cheyenne and preparing for this new role, it is clear he is going to hit the ground running.

In our view no other candidate combines the intelligence, integrity and track record of success that Matt will bring to HD 24 and are proud to support him this fall and we hope those of you who are serious about the future of Park County join us in doing so.

We know some will undoubtedly be upset that we used our platform at SG to make a political endorsement. We weighed this into our decision making process when making this post and concluded that we want everyone to know we stand by our friends and since we weren’t given a yard sign by Candidate Hall we would consider this our big digital yard sign -)

As a parting note, our family’s experience over the last few years has given us a very personal understanding of the fragility of democracy and we encourage everyone to get out and vote.

Have a great week.

Nick & Yulia

Dear Friends of Sleeping Giant,

The Cody Enterprise has put out a new story (see below) about Sleeping Giant and will be posting a correction in its print edition.

We would like to thank Chris Bacon and his staff for working with us to get the first story taken down and corrected.

We know very well the challenges of rebuilding a business, mistakes happen and it’s how you respond to those errors that show your character. We wish our neighbors at the Enterprise nothing but success.

Sincerely,

Sleeping Giant
