Someone said to me recently, “I live in Coldwater, Michigan. I don’t need self defense.”

For context, we were talking about her walking around downtown after dark, which I strongly recommended against.

Her response struck me as strange. I run a martial arts academy, so I probably think about self defense more than most. I also live in the old downtown, where it’s not uncommon to hear fighting and yelling throughout the night, especially in the summer months.

I’m not posting this to scare anyone or to be an alarmist, and I don’t think I need to go into recent events to make the point that bad things can happen anywhere. Living in Coldwater doesn’t change that, especially for women.

Even if it’s not here at Good Vibez, I encourage everyone to train. Whether it’s BJJ, boxing, wrestling or the shooting range, have a way to protect yourself if that unfortunate day ever comes. 🙏

My wife and I opened Good Vibez Jiu-Jitsu here in Coldwater in 2022. I grew up not far away in Jackson and have family in the surrounding area. We fell in love with the cozy, small-town atmosphere, and after almost five years in business we have met so many amazing people and built an incredible community and a beautiful life.

What I could not have known before I got to Coldwater, though, was how divided our town actually is, and how much worse that has gotten over the last several years. Branch County has a large immigrant community, and I have witnessed firsthand the downright hatred aimed at these families. Whether it's on social media or in the offhand, in-person comments about "those" people, the hostility is real and palpable. This post is not aimed at any one individual, and I really do believe that the hate and division comes primarily from a small but vocal minority.

I am a firm believer that we don't have to agree on everything to be good neighbors, and when we turn against our neighbors, or stay quiet while others do, we let that vocal minority win. Our Arab, Hispanic and Haitian brothers and sisters are a part of Coldwater, and they will always be welcome on our mats. If that bothers you, we may not be the right fit. Hate has no place at Good Vibez Jiu-Jitsu. 🙏

Big shoutout to our newest blue belts, Luke and Yandell 🟦🟦⬛🟦

This promotion has been a long time coming and it is so well deserved. These two guys are pillars of Good Vibez, and I'm so proud of all their hard work.

Great job, fellas. Can't wait to see where jiu-jitsu takes you. Keep training until your belt turns black 🤙

Every year, a few weeks after school starts, the back-to-school bug makes its rounds. There's no class tonight, but we should be back on our normal schedule tomorrow.

Let me use this as a quick reminder: jiu-jitsu is about as close-contact as it gets, so bugs spread fast on the mats. If you're running a fever, coughing, or just feel like garbage, give yourself or your kiddo a day or two off. Jiu-jitsu will be here when you're feeling better.

A few easy ways to help:

• Wash up before and after class
• Always wear a clean gi and gear
• Wipe down your water bottle and bag after class
• Most importantly, if you have a runny nose or cough, stay home

Everyone rest up, stay healthy, and we'll see you on the mats tomorrow 🤙
