And that’s a wrap!

Summer 2026 is one for the books for Beltway Elite. We started the season off with the club’s second international tour in Benidorm, Spain affording a great opportunity for high level rugby in advance of the competitive season. Several injuries during that tour led to great opportunities for our younger core group to battle their way into spots on our premier side and ultimately making their Nationals debut in Madison last week!

A sixth place finish ties Beltway’s best performance on the Nationals stage and with this young group, we can’t wait to see what 2027 has in store!

Thank you to all of the families, friends, and supporters throughout the season. We couldn’t have done it without you!

OUR CAPTAIN: LUC DESROCHES

Six years with Beltway. Four Nationals appearances. Luc Desroches has spent his time with the club helping set the emotional and competitive standard for the group, especially when the pressure is at its highest.

One teammate pointed to the moments before the win over Schuylkill River at Rites of Summer:

“One standout thing this teammate did that really made an impact was the leadership brought before the win against Schulkill River at the Rites of Summer Qualifier. A calming presence on the pitch and got the boys absolutely fired tf up for that game.”

That balance is difficult to create. The group needs calm enough to stay connected and execute, but enough fire to meet the physical and emotional demands of the match. Leadership is knowing which one the moment requires and finding a way to bring both.

Luc’s impact is not limited to what happens with the ball in his hands. It is also felt in the confidence, focus, and belief the group carries onto the field together.

He is also the creator of Chess 2. What is Chess 2? You’ll have to ask him.

Now, Luc returns to Nationals for the fifth time, ready to help lead Beltway into another weekend against the best in the country.

BREAKDOWNS BEWARE: BRADY DANIEL

Four years with Beltway have brought Brady Daniel to his Nationals debut—and there is no mystery about what his teammates want to see when he gets the ball in Madison.

One teammate said it plainly:

“I’m really hoping to see Brady run through 3-4 player.”

Whether that means three players or four, the assignment is clear.

Brady brings the kind of power and physicality that forces defenses to make difficult decisions. He can create momentum from contact, pull extra defenders into the tackle, and turn a crowded channel into an attacking opportunity for everyone around him.

He drives a manual, but everything on the field is automatic. Now he gets the chance to bring his physicality and field presence to Nationals.

Four years in. Three tournament MVPs. First Nationals. No interest in going around anyone.

NEXT UP: BRANDON DRUMMOND

In his first year with Beltway, Brandon Drummond has wasted no time making his presence felt. Now, he’s headed to Nationals for the first time with the opportunity to bring that same attacking threat to the biggest stage of the summer.

One teammate pointed to the performance that announced exactly what Brandon can do:

“Brandon had a standout moment against NOVA in the Skill 7s Qualifier when he had a hat trick to help seal a win over them. I’m excited to see him continue his high level attacking presence at Nationals.”

A hat trick in a qualifier is more than a stat line, it’s the ability to take over a match, punish every opening, and turn pressure into points. Brandon has shown that when the chances come, he knows how to finish them.

And before he was hitting gaps on a rugby pitch, Brandon grew up playing the trumpet. We’re all ready to see those jazz moves on the pitch come Saturday!

Now it’s time for his Nationals debut.

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK: FRANK KAYO

In two years with Beltway, Frank Kayo has established himself as the kind of player who can change the energy of a match the moment he steps onto the pitch. Now he’s headed to Nationals for the first time.

One teammate described exactly what they’re ready to see in Madison:

“I’m most excited to see Frank bring his aggression and explosiveness to the pitch at Nationals. He always raises the tempo and makes an impact when his name is called.”

That ability matters in 7s. A sudden burst, a dominant carry, or one aggressive defensive sequence can shift momentum before the opposition has time to settle. Frank brings urgency, physicality, and an edge that the entire group can feed from.

He was also really excited to learn that foxes are naturally becoming domesticated. Good for the foxes. Frank’s game, however, is not getting any tamer.

ANOTHER DEBUTANT: RORY MALEK

After four years with Beltway, Rory Malek is headed to Nationals for the first time.

His defining moment this season came at Rites of Summer, where one teammate watched Rory take control of a pool play match:

“Rory’s 3 try game against Schuylkill River 2 at Rites of Summer.”

A hat trick tells its own story. Rory found space, finished his opportunities, and delivered the kind of performance that can change the direction of an entire tournament day. It’s a perfect representation of his growth with this club over the years, and we’re beyond excited to see his talents on display on the Nationals stage.

Off the pitch, Rory claims he could beat anyone in chess. We haven’t confirmed that, but the confidence clearly carries over. Send him a challenge, but don’t expect a match until after the weekend!

READY FOR ACTION: ZACH UHLER

Two years into his time with Beltway, Zach Uhler is preparing to make his Nationals debut.

A teammate summed up what they’re most excited to see from him in one direct line:

“Zach making an impact when his number is called.”

That may sound simple, but it speaks to one of the most valuable qualities a player can bring to a Nationals squad: readiness. Sevens tournaments demand depth, adaptability, and players who can enter a match at any moment and immediately make an impact, and Zach is our guy.

Zach has shown that he can stay prepared, trust his role, and contribute when the opportunity arrives. At Nationals, every possession matters and so does every player called upon to influence it.

He also played Madden professionally for two years, so he knows something about reading the field, waiting for the opening, and making the right play when it appears.

The number will be called. Zach will be ready.

BACK IN ACTION: ROMAN JOHNSONBAUGH

Roman Johnsonbaugh has been playing rugby since he was six years old. Five years into his Beltway career, he now heads to Madison for his third Nationals appearance after putting in the work to battle his way back from injury.

One teammate captured everything Roman brings to the pitch:

“What Roman lacks in altitude he more than makes up for with his composure and intensity on the pitch. He’s a true competitor that’s worked relentlessly to battle back from injury, and I’m excited to watch his electric feet and soaring restarts in Madison”

Composure under pressure. Relentless competitiveness. Footwork that can unlock a defense and restarts that give us a chance to immediately take back possession. Roman’s impact comes from the combination of skill, edge, and belief he carries into every contest.

The road back required patience and work. Nationals is the reward and another opportunity to show exactly why he kept pushing.

His vertical prowess may be debatable. The intensity is not.

BACK AT IT AGAIN: JOANEL JOSEPH

Few players represent Beltway’s history and consistency quite like Joanel Joseph. After nine years with the club, Joanel is preparing for his seventh Nationals appearance, bringing experience, confidence, and a deep understanding of what this level demands.

When asked what they were most excited to see from him in Madison, one teammate kept it simple:

“Most excited to see him chip and chase at Nationals”

There are few sights in sevens more exciting than the Joanel Special, a perfectly weighted kick, a clean chase, and a player backing himself to win the race. Joanel has the vision and skill to create something from nothing, and his teammates are ready to see him put that creativity on display.

He doesn’t use TikTok, but he’s spent the last nine years making plenty of highlights without needing an app to prove it.

Seven Nationals appearances. One more opportunity to leave his mark.

NEXT MAN UP: BEN SYLVESTRE

Three years with Beltway. One Nationals appearance already behind him. Now Ben Sylvestre returns to the biggest stage ready to make his presence felt again.

Ben brings the kind of explosiveness that can change a match in a single carry. Give him a half gap, and he has the power to break through it. Give him open space, and he has the pace to turn an inch into a mile.

But one teammate is looking forward to more than just the rugby:

“I look forward to his powerful runs and his youthful wonder.”

That combination says a lot about Ben. There is the physical side everyone can see, the acceleration, the strength through contact, the ability to create momentum. Then there is the energy he brings with it, the joy and an enthusiasm for the moment that keeps the game from ever feeling routine.

At Nationals, we expect the powerful runs. We are just as excited to see everything else Ben brings with them.

And when he is not running through defenders, there is a good chance he is working on his Kendama game.
