💙 October is Spina Bifida Awareness Month! 💙

This month, we’re celebrating the amazing kids with Spina Bifida who remind us that there’s more than one way to play, explore, learn, and have fun. 🌈

At We Rock the Spectrum, we believe every child should have a place where they can be active, try new things, build confidence, and—most importantly—feel like they belong.

Sometimes inclusion means adapting the activity. Sometimes it means offering a little extra support. And sometimes it simply means making sure there’s a place at the table—and on the play floor—for everyone. 💙

🎃💜 Halloween can look different for every child—and that’s okay!

For kids with sensory needs or special needs, a little preparation can make Halloween feel more comfortable, predictable, and FUN. Here are a few reminders for families:

👻 Costume comfort comes first
Your child doesn’t have to wear a traditional costume! Let them choose what feels comfortable—even if that means pajamas, a favorite shirt, or no costume at all.

🎧 Bring sensory supports
Noise-reducing headphones, sunglasses, fidgets, communication devices, or a favorite comfort item can be helpful when things get overwhelming.

🍬 Practice trick-or-treating
Try practicing “trick or treat,” choosing candy, walking up to a door, or carrying a treat bag before the big night.

🌙 Go at your child’s pace
You don’t have to visit every house. One house, five houses, or none at all—there’s no wrong way to celebrate!

💬 Offer choices
“Do you want to go to another house or take a break?” Giving your child some control can make a big difference.

🛑 Watch for overwhelm
If the lights, sounds, crowds, or excitement become too much, take a break or head home. A successful Halloween doesn’t have to last all night!

📱 Prepare for the unexpected
Talk about what they might see and hear, and use pictures or a simple social story if that helps your child know what to expect.

💜 And remember: Halloween is about having fun, not following a rulebook.

Whether your child loves dressing up and running from house to house, prefers to watch from the sidelines, uses AAC to communicate, or would rather celebrate at home—**their Halloween can be exactly what works for them.** 🎃🌈
