The New York Times called Peter Case’s 1986 self-titled debut the best album of the year. Rolling Stone gave it five stars. It earned him a Grammy nomination. He made it with T Bone Burnett, Van D**e Parks, and Roger McGuinn — and it helped define what became known as Americana before the word existed.
He got there by way of The Nerves, an unsigned San Francisco trio that toured the country in 1977 sharing bills with the Ramones, Devo, Mink DeVille, and Pere Ubu. Nobody was doing it that way yet. Their “Hanging on the Telephone” was later covered by Blondie. Then The Plimsouls in LA — “A Million Miles Away” hit the Billboard charts and remains a garage rock standard covered by bands around the world. The Plimsouls appeared in the cult film Valley Girl. Two more Grammy nominations followed over the next twenty years.
His 16th solo album, Doctor Moan, is out now on Sunset Blvd Records — largely performed on piano, eleven songs, including his first solo recorded instrumental. Case: “I try to take things I love and use them in a new way.”
Fifty years in. Nothing has stopped him.
