🥋 Takedown Practice Gets Competitive 😂

Apparently you're never too young to start working on your takedowns.

Our toddler and four-year-old decided to get a little practice in. He goes for the takedown, she counters it and ends up landing right on top of him. 😂

Then they try again—and this time he gets the takedown.

Is the technique perfect? They're two and four. 😂 But they're having fun, getting comfortable on the mats, and learning through play.

Sometimes training is serious. Sometimes it's just two little kids trying to take each other down and having a great time doing it. 🥋

🥊 Technique Tuesday: Countering with Elbows

Elbows aren't just for attacking—they can also be a great way to counter incoming strikes.

Today's technique looks at using your elbows to protect yourself while immediately creating an opportunity to strike back.

Instead of thinking defend… then attack, we're working on making the transition happen as quickly as possible.

Protect yourself. Disrupt their attack. Hit back. 👊💥

The less time you give someone to continue attacking, the better.

🔪 Technique Wednesday: Your Defense Has to Work

You can have the fanciest knife technique in the world—but if your defense sucks, you're still dead.

When dealing with a knife, the first priority is simple: keep the blade away from you.

Today's video focuses on framing, creating a strong barrier between you and the weapon, and then striking back as quickly and aggressively as possible to disrupt the attacker.

The fancy stuff comes later.

First, you have to survive the initial attack.

Frame. Keep the blade away. Strike back hard.

🥊 Sunday Drill: Strike, Defend, Keep Going

A good striking drill shouldn't always have a pad holder who just stands there. 👊🦵

Today's drill is a longer striking combination, but throughout the combination the pad holder fires kicks back, forcing the striker to defend, recover, and immediately continue working.

It adds another layer to the drill—you can't get so focused on throwing your own strikes that you forget something might be coming back at you.

Strike. Defend. Recover. Keep going.

Because the other person doesn't always wait for you to finish your combination. 🥊

🥋 They’re Always Watching… 😂

Today's training: learning how to jump over an obstacle, hit the ground, and roll safely.

Apparently, we had another student taking notes. 👀

While everyone else was practicing jumping and rolling over the pads, our toddler decided it was her turn and started trying to do the exact same thing. 😂

Maybe the technique needs a little work—but the enthusiasm is definitely there.

One of the things we love about First Strike is seeing families on the mats and watching the little ones grow up around training.

Start them young. Really young. 🥋😂

🥋 Technique Tuesday: Shin, Foot, Face

Sometimes the answer is right in the name: shin, foot, face. 😅

Today's technique looks at dealing with someone who is standing beside you or standing over you while trying to choke you, including when you're working from guard.

But it isn't just a choke defense. It's also a useful option when you have someone in your guard and they're maintaining distance, making it difficult for you to control them with your hands.

Using your legs helps you manage that distance, disrupt their position, and create an opportunity to protect yourself or regain control.

On the ground, your legs aren't just for holding guard—they're weapons and tools for controlling space.

🥊 Monday Drill: Dekkers Long

Sometimes the combination just keeps going. 😅🥊

Today's drill is Dekkers Long—a longer striking combination designed to get you moving, thinking, and transitioning smoothly from one strike to the next.

The goal isn't to memorize a giant combination for a fight. It's to build coordination, conditioning, and the ability to keep flowing as your position and striking options change.

The longer the drill gets, the harder it is to stay sharp. That's where the work begins. 👊

🥋 Technique Tuesday: Closing the Distance

You may not be a grappler—but sometimes you need to get inside without getting hit.

If you're dealing with someone who is a better striker, standing at their preferred range and trading punches may not be your best option.

Today's video looks at using level changes and movement to safely close the distance, making yourself a harder target while getting into a position where you can control the fight.

You don't always have to beat someone at what they're good at. Sometimes you need to change the fight.

🥊 Welcome Back, Elliana!

After being away for boot camp and tech school, Elliana is officially back in Colorado Springs—and back on the mats at First Strike! 🇺🇸🥋

We’re excited that she’s been stationed back here and even happier to have her training with us again.

It’s always great seeing someone who started with us come back after taking on a new chapter in life. She may have been away for a while, but it didn't take long for her to jump right back in. 👊

Congratulations on making it through boot camp and tech school, Elliana, and welcome home!

🥋 Technique Tuesday: The Diaper Throw

You don't have to be the biggest person in the fight to put someone on the ground.

Today's technique is the Diaper Throw, a takedown that uses positioning, leverage, and your body—not just strength—to bring someone down.

That makes it a great option for a smaller defender dealing with a larger opponent.

Size and strength always matter, but good technique can help level the playing field.

Get low. Use leverage. Take away their balance. 👊
