THE HISTORY OF THE CENTRAL USA STRENGTH EXPO 🏋️‍♂️💥

It all started with a dream sparked by watching World’s Strongest Man on TV.

💥 In February 1993, Chad Coy competed in his first powerlifting meet—but Strongman was calling.

📞 After connecting with Randy Strossen at Ironmind and hearing about a show called Sugar Loaf, Chad hit the road…and the fire was lit.

🔥 In 1994, Chad Coy officially founded The Central:

Max Bench

Max Deadlift

150lb Farmers Walk for distance

From there, it grew every year:

📈 1995: 3" Axle Bench for reps, Trap Bar Deadlift, Max Farmers, and Arm-over-Arm Truck Pull
🏃 1996: Sandbag Carry added
🪵 1997: Log Clean & Press
🏋️ 1998: Squat added + the FIRST Women’s Division (though trophies didn’t meet athletes until 2002 😅)

👶 The Novice Division was born at the Central—giving new lifters a place to learn and grow in the sport.

📍 From 1994–2014, the show ran yearly in Indiana, Iowa, and Missouri.

Today, it’s grown beyond a single contest—it’s the Central USA Strength Expo, a full weekend celebrating all things strength:
