The classical techniques of Pranayama (yogic breathing), Pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses) and Dharana (concentration) to prepare for Dhyana (meditation) can help energize and calm your body and nervous system, manage your stress levels, and help you sleep better!

This coming October, join Jen Randle for an immersive afternoon delving into these techniques. The Art of Breath and Stillness: A Day of Pranayama and Meditation on October 3rd is structured to gently guide you from the hectic pace of daily life into a state of relaxation and heightened awareness.

Whether recent, latent, or long-held, loss is a universal experience.

On Sunday, October 4th, Julia leads Teaching Through Grief and Loss: A Trauma-Informed Yoga Teacher Training designed especially for yoga teachers. Because grief is not an exception but a part of the human experience, this workshop equips yoga teachers to meet every student —- and themselves —- with empathy, clarity, and care.

Julia's trauma-informed training will prepare yoga instructors to recognize the many faces of grief and to skillfully support students navigating its impact on body, mind, and spirit. Through a blend of education, embodied practice, and creative exploration, participants will:
↣ Understand the nature of grief —- how it manifests physically, mentally, emotionally, and energetically
↣ Explore trauma-informed principles that honor safety, choice, and empowerment in every class environment
↣ Learn a practical model for integrating grief awareness into yoga teaching —- offering structure and flexibility to meet students where they are
↣ Experience soothing and grounding practices that support regulation and emotional release without re-traumatization
↣ Develop class design tools for weaving grief-sensitive language, pacing, and sequencing into various yoga styles
↣ Reflect on personal relationship to loss as a foundation for authentic, compassionate teaching

Participants will leave this training with a deeper understanding of the grieving process, tools for embodying trauma-sensitive leadership, and a framework for crafting classes that invite both stability and healing. “Learning about yoga philosophy provides you with alternative ways of thinking about your life, enabling you to be more content with what you have and what you don’t have, and to become more comfortable with change. This in turn can make you a better citizen of the world.” --Nina Zolotow, Yoga for Times of Change

During any time of change, it is important to embrace that which remains steady in our lives. Yoga philosophy teaches that there is a ground of being that remains steady, unchanging, and dependable even through shifts of season and life changes.

At the Yoga Center of Columbia, we hope to be your steady and dependable destination for engaging your mind, body, and spirit with yoga, Pilates, meditation, and qigong. We offer over 100 classes each week taught by over 30 skilled instructors, and our workshops offer a focused look into specific topics to expand your knowledge and connect with others. Our prestigious cornerstone Yoga Teacher Training 200 and 500, and other in-depth training programs that provide continuing education credits for yoga teachers, are rewarding ways to continue your yoga journey.

Support your overall good health and well-being through the sister practices of Ayurveda and yoga.

This coming Sunday, September 27, we welcome Anjali Sunita, E-RYT-500, YACEP, and Ayurvedic Practitioner, and Claudia Neuman, MSW, E-RYT-500, and YACEP, who will lead Yoga and Ayurveda: Supporting the Lymphatic System.

This will be a tailored practice focused on the lymphatic system — an essential yet often overlooked component of immunity, circulation, and vitality. Claudia will guide you through a time-tested lymphatic āsana and movement sequence developed at the Himalayan Institute, the Joints and Glands Series. This accessible practice is designed to encourage the movement of fluids and lymph through gentle, intentional techniques, and includes breath work and deep relaxation.

Alongside the physical practice, Anjali will help you explore foundational Ayurvedic principles for supporting the body’s tissues, known as dhatus in Sanskrit, through what we ingest. Learn simple, practical insights and frameworks on how food, herbs, and daily habits can nourish the lymphatic system and promote healthy flow as per Ayurveda.

As the physical and lifestyle practices guide us toward meditation, a short Yoga Nidra will conclude our time together.

The workshop will include:
✅ A guided yoga practice focused on lymphatic movement
✅ Introductory Ayurvedic teachings on tissue support and digestion
✅ Yogic and Ayurvedic tools for encouraging fluid balance and detoxification
✅ Some tea samples and community time to converse
✅ Practical takeaways you can integrate into daily life

Suitable for all practitioners, this in-person-only workshop is ideal for anyone interested in cultivating resilience, balance, and a deeper understanding of how yoga and Ayurveda work together to support systemic well-being. Registered Yoga Teachers receive 3 CE hours.

The Yoga Center of Columbia has a robust schedule of over 100 classes in yoga, Pilates, meditation and qigong, taught by over 30 expert instructors. Meet one of our newest instructors: Dana Varela, RYT 200, who has been a dedicated yoga practitioner for over a decade, and plans to complete her RYT 500 training this year in 2026!

Dana came to the alignment-based teachings of Hatha yoga with a rich background as a functional movement strength training coach. “My existing knowledge and passion for understanding anatomy has only deepened through my own yogic practice and yoga teacher training education,” she says. “I think of my class offering as a transformative journey incorporating a strong alignment-based physical experience while creating awareness, utilizing breathwork, mudras and a heartfelt quality to honor the vast traditions of yoga. My style and this aspect allow students to find a balance between the body, mind and spirit in a safe, enlightening and yet confidence-enhancing way. My wish would be to provide students with the abilities to find these qualities both on and off their mats.”

Check out Dana’s teacher page for a full list of her upcoming classes, including her Tuesday and Thursday Yoga 1-2 weekly classes! In her spare time, Dana enjoys time spent with her grand-dogs Sadie (an energetic Bull Terrier) and Mabel (an English Bulldog).
