“The bottom position of the squat” - picked up from Mark Rippetoe via The CrossFit Training & Education Journal Issue 52 - December 2006

What does this mean?
“The hips are lowered until the top surfaces of both of the legs at the hip joint are lower than the knees, and then the bar is lifted back up.

The bottom position is identified by A) the apex of the crease in the shorts formed as the hips are lowered, B) the surface of the top of the patella, C) the plane formed by a straight line between the two, and D) the dipping of the hip end of that plane below horizontal.

The finish position is the same as the starting position, and the athlete must return to it before the bar is racked.” - Mark Rippetoe Starting Strength

“Sad elbows vs. happy elbows”

When?
Fronts squats

What does this mean?
In an optimal front rack position the barbell will sit in the channel between the base of the neck and the rear of the deltoid.

Driving the elbows forward will create a ‘shelf’ for the bar to sit comfortably on top of the shoulders and chest.

Doing so will also increase the rigidity of your upper back. This will help you maintain an upright trunk position throughout the entire lift.

Similar cues:
“Elbows are lasers”
“Front rack clock face”
“Trunk supports the bar”
“Drive the elbows UP”

I hope you found this valuable. If so, or tag someone who needs to see it.

“Pin your elbows behind your back” - picked up from

When?
Setting position for back squats

What does this mean?
“Before you descend I want you to think about trying to pin your elbows behind your back and getting your armpits and lats as tight as possible BEFORE you go down.

If they’re not tight at the beginning, they can’t get tight on the way up. You’ve already lost the chance to do it.

Try to create a ‘proud chest’, squeeze your elbows behind your back as aggressively as possible, making a very rigid spine BEFORE you begin your descent.” -

I hope you found this valuable. If so, or tag someone who needs to see it.
