An opportunity to run for a great cause.
Help a Hero: The BDRC Heatwave Five Miler
In the United States, we are free to run when and where want and to live our lives without fear of violence. American heroes place themselves in danger in hostile locations around the world to ensure we continue to have those freedoms. One of those heroes is part of our Big Dog family.
On June 1, 1LT Micah Andersen was severely injured in Afghanistan. While leading his platoon on a mission and through a fire fight south of Kandahar, Micah was hit by an IED. He lost one leg in the blast, and the other was later amputated. Micah is now at Fort Sam Houston, on life support, undergoing a series of surgeries to repair his body and prepare him for rehabilitation.
Linzi Andersen, Micah’s wife, helped many in our Big Dog community last spring and summer. She talked running with you, fit you for shoes, helped you find the right gear and made you red velvet pancakes for the Fourth of July! After Micah finished his officer’s training at Fort Benning, the Andersens headed off to Fort Bliss, Texas, where Micah would become a platoon leader. When Micah deployed to Afghanistan for his second tour (his first tour was as an enlisted soldier), he left Linzi behind to grow their family. Baby Jay was born on April 29.
Linzi is by Micah’s side daily, but he has yet to meet his son. The Andersen family has a rough and uncertain road ahead. We ask you to run the 2013 Heatwave Five Miler in support of Linzi, Micah, Baby Jay, and all the soldiers who are away from their families and risk everything for us. Proceeds of this year’s race will go to a fund set up to support Micah in his recovery and rehabilitation.
One of the best things about our running community in Columbus is the supportive and loving hearts of its members. Let’s pull together in support of one of our own. From our Big Dog hearts to yours, we thank you.
