Columbus Shotokan Karate
A traditional ISKF Shotokan Karate club located in Columbus, Ohio, USA.
Dear Columbus Shotokan Karate Members,
I feel the need to remind everyone that how we conduct ourselves on platforms such as Facebook is important to our organization. The International Shotokan Karate Federation is an organization that promotes personal growth, of a physical, mental and emotional nature. Character improvement is foundational to our training and reaches back to the very beginning of karate development in Japan. The principles of the Dojo Kun are not mere suggestions, but are intended as ideals to be used to strengthen and augment the natural and/or instilled values you already possess. In the world today, social media platforms are rife with vitriol and confirmation bias, therefore I ask that you please present yourself as someone that respects the human dignity of all persons and refrains from offensive comments.
Your membership depends on it.
Kind Regards,
Larry Rota
Chief Instructor

Great youth event coming up February 10th. See you there!
The annual Youth Shiai (tournament) will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The shiai is open to all Mid-America and local Shotokan youth karate students under 18 years old. The events will include individual kata, individual kumite, and team kata. To be eligible to participate, competitors need to know the permitted kata and kumite for their rank. Details can be found on the Youth Shiai email link below.
This is an opportunity for the kids to train with a specific goal in mind, test their skills, and participate in friendly competition. In addition, it gives the youth competitors, judges, and table workers an opportunity to prepare for the other tournament opportunities being held this year. Also, this event qualifies as one of the three annual judging event requirements for certified judges.
We will need volunteers to help with setup and teardown, the ring table, staging, youth ring assistants, the bake sale, the dojo store, and taking photos.

Winter training announcement here! Looking forward to great trainings
Mid-America will start off the new year with our annual Kangeiko on January 13–14, 2024. Kangeiko, translates to “cold training”, and is often thought of as an opportunity to start the new year with a renewed spirit; the idea of “a new year, a new start.”.
This year’s Kangeiko will focus on body shifting and dynamics, while also including the study of three advanced kata: Jiin, Wankan, and Meikyo. Additionally, the camp will feature a shiai to allow for judging and competitor practice.
Camp will be conducted by Sensei Martin Vaughan, 8th dan. He will be assisted by Sensei James Oberschlake, 8th dan. The camp events will include 3 training clinics, a kyu exam, dan pretest, and shodan-nidan exams. There will also be a group dinner for those able to attend on Saturday evening.
Camp will be hosted by Adam Clouser and The Ohio State University Karate Club. You can find complete details here: https://mailchi.mp/fc41a7a0b78d/mid-america-iskf-kangeiko-13909749
