HERO USA 2027
The Plan to Make the Dream Real
For more than fifteen years, HERO USA has been in the trenches.
We have shown up at parks, rivers, community events, youth programs, city-sponsored activities, and public spaces across Central Ohio. We have worked with families, volunteers, nonprofit partners, local governments, schools, youth organizations, veterans, and community leaders. We have put thousands of people on the water, often at no cost to them, because we believe access to outdoor recreation should not depend on income, background, neighborhood, or circumstance.
Many of you have been part of that journey.
You carried boats. You fitted life jackets. You registered families. You taught first-time paddlers. You worked long days in the heat. You stayed late to clean up. You helped nervous children feel safe. You gave families an experience they may never have had otherwise. You helped turn a simple day on the water into something people remembered.
You believed in HERO before there was a building, before there was a permanent home, before there was a major operating budget, and before the larger vision was fully understood.
That vision has never been just about kayaks or paddleboards.
The vision has always been much bigger.
HERO USA was founded on the belief that urban waterways can become powerful community assets. We believe they can bring people together, create safe and positive opportunities for young people, improve public health, support environmental stewardship, create jobs, strengthen neighborhoods, and reconnect communities to the cities they call home.
Our goal is to create a true downtown community waterfront center in Columbus: a place built for the community, by the community.
It would serve as the permanent home of HERO USA and the operational center for Paddle in the City, our social-enterprise arm. It would support kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, water-safety education, youth development, volunteer programs, school partnerships, veteran programming, adaptive recreation, environmental initiatives, community events, nonprofit collaboration, and affordable public access.
The model would operate on a sliding scale so that those who can afford to participate help make access possible for those who cannot.
That is what makes this different from a traditional commercial watercraft concession.
This is not simply about renting equipment.
This is about building community infrastructure.
Columbus is our home. It is where HERO began. It is where the model has already been tested, refined, and proven through years of service. We have worked with the City, Franklin County, the State of Ohio, municipalities, major nonprofit organizations, community partners, and thousands of residents. We have received grants, earned public trust, operated successful programs, won a competitive watercraft concession agreement, and continued serving through leadership changes, redevelopment, COVID, setbacks, and years of rebuilding.
The work never stopped.
Now we are preparing for the next chapter.
We are building the most complete, professional, evidence-based vision and implementation plan HERO USA has ever created.
This is not another grant application.
It is not another short proposal.
It is not another attempt to explain who we are in a few pages.
We are assembling the full story, the full evidence, the full operating model, and the full vision for what HERO USA can become in Columbus and, one day, in other metropolitan communities across the country.
The final project will include three major volumes:
Book One: The Vision
Why this work matters, why Columbus is positioned to lead, and how HERO USA can become a national model for urban waterfront activation and community-centered recreation.
Book Two: The Columbus Model
How the downtown community waterfront center, Paddle in the City, youth programming, public partnerships, operations, safety systems, funding model, and countywide expansion can work in practice.
Book Three: The Evidence
The fifteen-year record supporting the vision: grants, photographs, news stories, videos, event records, participation data, contracts, testimonials, letters of support, architectural plans, financials, safety materials, partnerships, and the history of everyone who helped build HERO.
That is where we need your help.
We are asking our volunteer family to help us document the legacy that all of us created together.
We need people who can help locate and organize:
- photographs and videos from past events,
- news stories and media appearances,
- old emails, flyers, contracts, proposals, and grant records,
- participation counts and event information,
- volunteer stories and testimonials,
- partner contacts and letters of support,
- memories of major milestones,
- records of youth, family, veteran, and community programming,
- safety procedures, training materials, and operating documents,
- design ideas, site plans, building concepts, and historical proposals,
- and anything else that helps tell the full HERO USA story.
We also need help from people with experience in:
- writing and editing,
- document organization,
- graphic design,
- photography and video,
- data collection,
- accounting and financial modeling,
- grant research,
- nonprofit governance,
- architecture and construction,
- youth programming,
- public policy,
- fundraising,
- sponsorships,
- media relations,
- and community outreach.
You do not have to be an expert.
You do not have to commit hundreds of hours.
You simply need to believe that this work matters and be willing to contribute what you can.
One photograph may help prove a decade of community impact.
One old email may document a major partnership.
One testimonial may remind a decision-maker that this work changes lives.
One introduction may connect us to the person who helps move this vision forward.
One volunteer may uncover the piece that completes the story.
This effort is not about glorifying HERO USA.
It is not about making any one person look important.
It is not about who receives the credit.
It is about building something that benefits the community.
Our measure of success is simple:
Does this create more opportunity?
Does it help more young people?
Does it bring people together?
Does it create safe, positive experiences?
Does it strengthen Columbus?
Does it leave every community better than we found it?
If the answer is yes, then it belongs in the HERO vision.
We believe Columbus can become the founding city of a model that other communities across America will eventually study and adapt. Not because HERO needs national recognition, but because every city with underused public waterways, underserved youth, disconnected neighborhoods, and a need for stronger community engagement deserves a solution that works.
We have already spent fifteen years proving the heart of the model.
Now it is time to document it, strengthen it, and present it at the level it deserves.
This is HERO USA’s 2027 Plan for Dreams Come True.
Not dreams built on wishful thinking.
Dreams built on evidence.
Dreams built on hard work.
Dreams built on service.
Dreams built by volunteers.
Dreams built by a community that never stopped believing.
To everyone who has carried a boat, taught a child, staffed an event, donated equipment, made an introduction, written a check, offered advice, or simply believed in the mission:
This next chapter belongs to you too.
We are asking you to help us build it.
