Notes from a student of the Udemy Complete Krav Maga Course by Boaz Aviram
I am watching all the Udemy Videos very carefully, with a lot of attention, and taking notes on the main points. I am also training with a training partner who is an instructor, and we are practicing together.
The Material is Very Practical! If someone simply follows the step-by-step of what is shown with dedication, they would not even need to think about creating or structuring a separate course. Just following everything that is done there thoroughly would already put them in a very good place. It is amazing to see how easily the concepts are explained in the videos. I imagine that your experience and the fact that soldiers would arrive with very different backgrounds and levels required you to be able to take the one who understood the least by hand and bring everyone to the same level.
Imrich “Imi” Lichtenfeld (Imi Sde-Or)
• Who he was: The founder of Krav Maga, born in 1910 (in what was then Budapest and grew up mainly in Bratislava). He was a champion athlete in boxing, wrestling, and gymnastics before developing his combat system.
• Role: Lichtenfeld designed Krav Maga as a practical, real-world system of hand-to-hand combat — originally to defend Jewish communities in Europe, and later for the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
• Legacy: He served as the first Chief Instructor of Krav Maga in the IDF where he refined the methods for military application. After retiring from the army (around the 1970s), he transitioned the system into civilian teaching and Krav Maga organizations.
• Death: Lichtenfeld passed away in January 1998 in Netanya, Israel.
________________________________________
Boaz Aviram
• Who he is: A senior Krav Maga instructor who trained directly under Imi Lichtenfeld and later in the Israeli Defense Forces.
• Role in Krav Maga: Aviram served as the third Chief Instructor of Krav Maga at the IDF Fighting Fitness Academy — following Imi Lichtenfeld and Eli Avikzar.
• Contributions:
o He specialized in teaching advanced Krav Maga techniques to IDF special-operations units and oversaw instructor training programs.
o After retiring from the IDF in 1983, he continued teaching Krav Maga internationally (including to law-enforcement and security personnel) and promoting what he calls the original IDF-style Krav Maga.
o Aviram also translated and contributed to Krav Maga manuals and has published books and instructional materials on the system.
• Legacy: He is often described as one of the senior living keepers of the original Krav Maga curriculum, maintaining the lineage back to its founder.

How They Relate
• Imi Lichtenfeld developed Krav Maga and was the first head instructor in the IDF.
• Boaz Aviram trained under that system and later became the third chief instructor, passing on the knowledge and teaching advanced methods after Lichtenfeld’s retirement.

One of the Secrets of Krav Maga is that if you can learn a knockout drop punch and a cross for follow up if the Drop Punch has been evaded in one hour, you can teach it in one hour.

So if you can learn the whole curriculum and drill it in 21 hours plus warm up according to the breakdown of the total training time, you can instruct it in 21 hours. It might take you a little longer, you might have a crowd that want to learn piecemeal section according to their fitness and schedule, but eventually you will get there if you keep track of what you missed, make lessons plans and monitor yourself with notes to self.

The more you teach it the more it forces you to have an introspective look and hammer your own knowledge and ensure you have a sound knowledge and you are delivering a complete practical training system to others that will help them save their lives in critical moments.

Krav Maga was first the name for Imi Lichtenfeld Intensive Short Hand to hand Combat Course taught at the Israel Defense Forces. It is just an impressive Hebrew Name to Contact Combat, Face to Face Combat, Hand to Hand Combat…
His successor at the IDF Eli Avikzar and Imi Lichtenfeld top student continued the role of the Chief of the Hand to Hand Combat Department at the IDF Combat Fit Academy. He continued to hone and ensure the short curriculum contains techniques and drills in all the elements of the chain of Defense. Eli’s Avikzar’s Successor at the IDF Combat Fit Academy was Boaz Aviram! Boaz Aviram Mastered the System and the IDF Short Intensive Training System and Kept it upon moving to civilian life!

The First and Second Israel Defense Forces Krav Maga Chiefs ran Civilian Krav Maga schools with Belt System. Imi had reservations to keep the IDF Krav Maga in the Security Forces and not to the average civilian…At the same time, mimicking the vast Martial Arts Belt System where student aspire to progress through biweekly hours of training over five years and continue as higher ranking black belts for advanced training with some becoming civilian Instructors. 10
What was the IDF Curriculum in the 1980’s with Eli Avikzar and Boaz Aviram continued to this day with Boaz Aviram?
About 215 techniques and 15 training drills which can be taught for a group of up to 10 people with one instructor empirically over 5 days 30 hours total 6 hours a day training of which one hour is dedicated to specific warm up and rehearsal of prior lessons….In the IDF it was geared toward 20 students to train over 3 weeks including repetitive lessons to facilitate instructor training and lesson evaluation.
Why only about 215 techniques and 15 training drills? Why not have simulated scenarios of field combat? Why not add thousands of other martial arts training methods?
Simply put if you want to reach an attacker’s pressure points and control them not letting the attacker reach your pressure points and control you and divide it to let’s say three ranges kicking punching and grappling with the purpose of a swift kill with one to three moves, there is not any room left for all the rest of the techniques. They were all evaluated at least by categories and if you take a look at it from a different angle such as what are the most efficient moves with your arms legs and body to reach and manipulate an opponent pressure points in these ranges you are left with about 215 techniques. So it just happened that the training of all the other combat sports and martial arts were distilled to facilitate short effective and efficient hand to hand combat training system.
Why not have all kinds of choreographed surprise scary scenarios? Well with the intensive time of instruction you do not want to waste time. All you have to deal is with a man or a woman trying to reach and control others’ pressure points with their arms legs and bodies executing kicking punching elbowing knife hand striking biting neck breaking moves and train in the most efficient and effective methods of attacking with them or defense with blocks or escapes.
Do you really care what color clothes your attacker is wearing? Do you really care if its in a bar or the street or the gym? You must concentrate on the attacker’s most efficient abilities and foil them before they were started as you identify their intention to harm you closing into your space.
All that has to be done under the constraint of the human reaction time – before it is too late as you waited and let the attacker put his hands on your pressure points or strike or kick them or stab them or club them…
The other black belts of Imi including Imi and his best students got into a Civilian Routine upon retirement or even before as they separated the training methods between the Security Forces and the lax twice a week Dojo. In that environment you had a mix crowd motivated by belts and fitness with hesitation of injury. For the most and for several generations they got into the habit of not explaining exactly how to execute a knock out strike or a kick and they did not correct students that did not gradually train their training partners in efficient attacks. Therefore the blocks and counter almost always worked. It became dream choreography! Some had a pet student which also got into sparring and fights but the IDF Krav Maga was to train all soldiers to strive and reach a level of proficiency for Self Defense and Hand to hand Combat.

At some point the name Krav Maga was adopted by Martial Artists that never took any Krav Maga course nor attended a Civilian Krav Maga school. These type of happening is long known in the martial arts world.
Many Krav Maga Schools out there today. Tons of errors along the process with no clue of anything. Sometimes they insist that what they are doing is correct using unchallenged choreography and sometimes they drift to other directions. So they make it work for the students with practicing non resisting choreographies, fitness, irrelevant drills and inefficient attack and false belief that it is the best and with time and more training you will progress.
However not knowing exactly how to teach efficient attacks blocks and escapes the more students train the more they gain bad habits which are hard to eradicate. If they are lucky and got into a fight against less challenging opponent they might come unharmed!
The idea is that your mind has to control your judgment, recognition of upcoming danger, control instinctive blocks and reaction to danger, and not waste time by trying to reach the opponent pressure points moving in zigzag losing time an losing power in kicks and knockout strikes.
You have to have a road map for all the ranges of combat, the vitals of your opponent, and know the outcome of each move under the constraint of the human reaction time. Once you got this under control, you are secure as you know what is going to happen or more precisely what could happen if you do not move at the right moment and either attack your stalker, or block your attacker and simultaneously or close to it counter attack him.
So if you are into self control of your life and physical boundaries you should really give it a try!
