Meet Oliver Rice! 👋

Oliver joined our dock crew last fall, and he's been showing up with a smile and a can-do attitude since day one.

He is always finding little ways to make things better, whether it's detailing a boat, sprucing up the dock office, or asking to learn something new like how to replace a spark plug.

Our Lake Wylie members have noticed: Oliver has earned a perfect 5 out of 5 rating on our post-outing surveys, with members sharing their appreciation for him helping load their boat, carrying gear to/from their car, or just being great with their kids.

We can tell he likes it here, too… despite running his own business (Lawn Bros. Lawn Care), he’s always picking up extra shifts; he even admitted that he missed Carefree when he returned from Europe this summer. We'll take that as a compliment! 😉

We're lucky to have you, Oliver. Thanks for all you do for our members and our club! 💙

This is what a 70 degree fall weekend is supposed to feel like.

Cove-hopping, dog on the bow, “warm enough” water for water sports still… and a coastline cruise to close it out. No prep before, no cleanup after. Just the good part, on repeat!

Meet Dana Geers 👋⚓

Eight years ago, Dana took the helm of our dock operations, and we can't imagine this club without her.

Dana leads a team of nearly 60 people, many of them teens learning customer service for the first time. If you've ever been greeted by name, helped aboard, or sent off with a boat that's ready to go, you've seen her leadership at work.

She's the heart and soul of our club. She could probably run the whole thing herself, but she still insists on taking the boat rags home to do the laundry.

Happy 8 years, Dana! 🎉 Thank you for everything you do for our team and our members. 💙

Our members are the whole point. 💙

The families who bring the kids for their first tubing run. The first-timers who showed up nervous but now dock like pros. And yes, the dogs riding proudly on the bow. 🐾

You turned Lake Norman, Lake Wylie, and Lake Hickory into your backyard this season, and watching you make those memories is the best part of our job!

Say hello to Gary Hauff! 🩷⚓ If you’ve been out on the dock, chances are he’s already got a smile and a wave for you.

Gary has been part of the Carefree team for 4 years. Being on the water and around boats all day is a pretty great perk, but the real reason he loves this job is the people. He’s built real friendships with his weekday regulars, and he truly enjoys mentoring the younger members of our dock staff and watching them grow.

Before all this, Gary spent his career in economic development in the Seattle area. When he retired in 2020, he and his wife Jeannette went looking for a new adventure and landed here. Jeannette fell for a neighborhood with tree lined sidewalks and front porches, and they both love the weather. Their son is a pilot and a surfer, so it sounds like the adventurous streak runs in the family. ✈️🏄

So when you see Gary out there, go say hi. He’ll be glad you did. 🛥️

Thank you for sharing what your membership has meant to you. Family time on the lake whenever you want it, and a few peaceful “working lunches” on Lake Norman on a random weekday. That’s the Carefree life. 🛥️

Okay, maybe not the best day for it, but today's winds got us thinking about the three sailboats in our fleet. 🌬️⛵

While what's left of Isaias blows through, they're tied up tight at Kings Point Marina on Lake Norman, waiting on a gentler breeze:

Second Wind. Yeah, the name is a little on the nose today.

Sundog. Steady and forgiving on a long, slow afternoon.

And #3... our newest, doesn't have a name yet. That's where you come in.

If you were out on the lake this summer, you probably met Michael. He didn't stay the new guy for long. Before we knew it, he was one of us.

Michael came to us from Autobell, so he already knew how to make a boat shine. But ask him what he liked most about the job, he would say the people: our members, his coworkers, and the marina staff he got to know along the way.

Turns out the feeling was mutual. Michael made such an impression on our members and team that he was awarded this year's Patricia “Gigi” Graveline Memorial Scholarship. 🎓 Each year, this scholarship invites our high school seniors and college staff to reflect on their experiences at Carefree and express what they've learned through a short essay. Congratulations, Michael!

Michael's now at NC State studying engineering, and we couldn't be prouder. Michael, there's always a spot on the dock for you. 💙
