Why do we shake hands with everyone at the end of class?

Because Jiu Jitsu is about much more than techniques.

At the end of every class, we bow to honor our legacy, our leadership and our instructors. Then we take the time to greet every person on the mat.

No matter how hard we trained or competed against each other, when the class is over, we are one team.

It is a simple gesture of respect, gratitude and Brotherhood. We acknowledge the people who helped us improve that day, because none of us grows alone.

Professor Yuri is a great example of what we believe at Gracie Barra Lake Norman.

As a professor, he leads by example on the mats, sharing his knowledge, discipline and passion for Jiu Jitsu. But one of the best things to see is having his children right there beside him, learning, growing and sharing the same journey together.

This is what Jiu Jitsu is about for us. More than techniques, belts and training. It is about building confidence, discipline, respect and creating memories as a family.

The Senna Family ❤️🥋

One of the greatest things about Jiu Jitsu is seeing families grow together on and off the mats.

The Senna family is a great example of what Gracie Barra Lake Norman is all about: family, discipline, respect, commitment, and sharing the journey together.

Watching José and his family train, learn, support each other, and create memories on the mats is something very special. This is bigger than Jiu Jitsu. These are lessons and experiences that the kids will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

More than instructors. Leaders, mentors, and role models. 🔺

Coach Vonzel is one of the dedicated instructors here at Gracie Barra Lake Norman, and we are proud to have him as part of our team.

What makes a great instructor goes far beyond knowing Jiu-Jitsu. It’s about leadership, character, responsibility, and being a positive example for our students — on and off the mats. Seeing Coach Vonzel alongside his son is a perfect reminder that Jiu-Jitsu is also about family and leading by example.

At GB Lake Norman, we take the quality and safety of our instruction seriously. Our instructors participate in the Gracie Barra Instructor Certification Program (ICP), an extensive training process designed to prepare them to teach according to Gracie Barra’s standards and methodology. Our team also completes important requirements including background checks and First Aid/CPR training.

We are proud of the team we are building and grateful for instructors like Coach Vonzel who represent our values every day.
