Champions aren’t only built during the season. They’re also built in moments like this… when you stop and recognize the work. 💪
Had a great time at the wrestling banquet tonight celebrating the W.B. Ray Texans and everything these athletes accomplished this season.
They have a great team of coaches at their school and they put in a lot of time, effort, and heart, it was good to see them recognized for it. Nights like this matter. It’s important to celebrate the team, the growth, and the work that got put in all season long.
I’m proud of these young athletes and grateful that I get to work with some of them through our wrestling club as they continue developing in the offseason.
Now it’s time to look ahead. Summer is where the next season starts. More work. More growth. More goals to chase. 🤼♂️🔥
Congratulations to all the athletes recognized tonight. Keep going.
If you want to put in work this offseason, come train with us at Sugoi Submissions Wrestling Club.

Over a month late posting these grand opening weekend photos, but some moments need time to fully appreciate.
What a weekend that was at Sugoi Submissions.
Huge thanks to Asa, Nate, Matt, John, Doug, Jimi, Thane, Will, Lauren, Kris, Mike, James, Merae, Rachel, Jen, Joleen, Juan, Christie, Tony, Sarah, my father-in-law Papa Chuck and his wife, Renee, Rodrigo, Richard, Eddie, my incredible wife Jade, my kids, and every single person who made the journey to be with us. Former students from North Carolina, old training partners, local academy owners, friends from across the country - seeing you all come together was truly humbling.
People traveled from all over the U.S. just to support what we're building here in Corpus Christi, and that level of love and support is something I'll never take for granted. Your time is precious, and you chose to spend it with us. That means everything.
Every person in these photos represents a piece of the martial arts journey that led to Sugoi Submissions. From beginners taking their first steps on the mats to seasoned practitioners sharing their knowledge, this community made our vision a reality.
I'm still processing it all, but I know we're just getting started. Thank you for being part of something special.

Athlete Scholarship applications are now closed.
Thank you to the veterans who applied to the We Defy Athlete Program. We are honored by the number of men and women ready to step onto the mats and begin the journey.
Our next application window will open June 7, 2026 at 11 AM EST.

Our Athlete Scholarship applications open March 8 at 11 AM EST.
Through the We Defy Athlete Program, disabled combat veterans receive a 12-month scholarship to train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at an Approved Training Facility. For many veterans, stepping onto the mats becomes a powerful step forward — improving mental and physical health and connecting with a strong community of people who understand the journey.
Spots fill quickly, so interested veterans are encouraged to apply as soon as the application window opens.
If you know a veteran who might benefit from this program, share this with them and set your alarms for Sunday.

At We Defy Foundation, our responsibility is to ensure the veterans we serve are training in environments that are welcoming, respectful, and supportive of their healing journey.
We are aware of concerning conversations within the broader Jiu Jitsu community. While We Defy does not take positions on unadjudicated matters, we want to clearly reaffirm our standards.
Veteran scholarships are placed intentionally. Approved training facilities are expected to foster a positive community, maintain appropriate professional boundaries, and treat every veteran with dignity and respect. Alignment with these expectations is an absolute requirement for participation in the We Defy program.
We firmly believe in the therapeutic benefits of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for the veteran community. Those benefits, however, are only realized when the art is practiced in an environment that supports connection, growth, and transformation. We remain committed to upholding that standard for every veteran training under the We Defy scholarship program.
