He is also the organization’s senior pitching instructor. A resident of Mohegan Lake, New York, Mike graduated from Walter Panas High School in 2006. During his high school years, he was a four year varsity baseball starter, and was awarded All-League and All-Section Honors following his sophomore, junior and senior years. Following Mike’s junior and senior seasons he was also awarded as an All-St
ate player. Additionally, he was named League MVP, and first team all-star by the New York Journal News and the North County News. In addition to his high school achievements, Mike’s abilities were recognized in many areas of the baseball community. Following his performance at the Junior Olympic Tournament, Mike was extended a tryout for the USA Youth National team. This invitation went to 18 players from a pool of 1100. After his sophomore season, he played for the silver medal Hudson Valley team in the New York State Empire Games. Baseball America ranked Mike as the 63rd best player in the nation from the class of 2006. He was named the Top Prospect by Perfect Game at the Northeast Top Prospect Showcase. He was invited to the East Coast Professional Showcase in Wilmington, North Carolina by the Boston Red Sox and to a closed tryout of 15 players by the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. Mike was recruited by over 100 Division 1 baseball schools and offered scholarships from over 50 schools. After committing to East Carolina University, he was a key player on the school’s team from 2006 – 2011, serving as both a starter and relief pitcher. In addition, he was named captain three times at ECU, the first to do so in school history. During his college career, East Carolina was ranked in the top 25 of Division 1 baseball programs each year. After college, he went on to play one season of professional baseball in the Can-Am League. What the achievements and accolades of Mike’s baseball career don’t speak to are the setbacks. In the midst of a dynamic freshman year (midweek starter; on his way to playing summer ball in the Cape Cod League), he sustained an injury. He was diagnosed with a tear of the UCL in his pitching elbow. Following repair surgery (Tommy John) by Dr. James Andrews in Alabama, he rehabbed for over a year before he pitched again. A second surgery was required in 2009, followed by a diagnosed shoulder injury. He was able to come back each time but following a stint in Independent League baseball, he decided to retire and direct his efforts toward coaching and private instruction. It is this experience of pitching at the highest levels, combined with the devastation of injuries that has influenced Mike’s coaching philosophy and made him one of the area’s top pitching instructors over the past several years. He works to protect a pitcher’s arm while directing them towards success on the mound. In addition to private instruction, Mike has coached high school teams as well as elite travel teams. Throughout his coaching career he has placed amateur players in colleges from Division 1 to Junior College level. This has been facilitated through an extensive network of college baseball coaches across the country. On a personal note, Mike is a teacher with the New York City School system. He lives with his fiancé, Katie and dog, Mo in Mohegan Lake, New York. A December wedding is planned.
