August Bounskee Night recap: Not much of a turnout in Salem, but we caught the attention of a handful of takeout customers- earning a couple new followers and likely some future sales. Good ol’ Chase Lopez came through and played with me awhile. We faced off in a bout of the new ā€œStreet Fighter Bounskeeā€ (not settled on the name) and even though I knocked him out quickly in round 1, he took me down in a close round 2 and completely destroyed me in round 3! (Video is of the end of round 2). He also set a new record in Overflow- beating his previous perfect score by less than half a second! We won’t talk about his score in the Classic High Score Contest šŸ¤šŸ«£šŸ˜‚ (It’s logged in our stats).
Corvallis Bounskee Night was interesting! Though none of my regulars were able to make it, we had 13 new players (3 had come once before and all came specifically to play Bounskee). Jared (the winner of our recent Boss Battle Community Challenge) and Damitrye Bunner (never played before) really got into the competitive spirit and challenged each other to several of the game versions. As for the contests, Jared beat Damitrye in the only official Classic bout winning him that baller chip. His luck didn’t hold for the Classic High Score Contest, though. Damitrye took that baller chip with an excellent score of 310 (shout out to Avery who scored 270). Damitrye also won the Overflow Contest with a score of 8. J and D’s bout of Bounskee Baseball was pretty exciting! ā€œStreet Fighter Bounskeeā€ continues to be a hit so we may have to make it an official game version and start keeping stats… It was also fun playing the underplayed, but some of my favorite versions, Bounskee Poker and Blackjack with Jared at the end of the night when it was just us left. Still haven’t had a proper Bounskee Poker night… Anyone interested to host one?
Looking forward to next month because I can’t wait for the older and newer Bounskee fans/fam to meet and play! 2nd Mondays in Salem and 2nd Tuesdays in Corvallis. Join us! šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„

My apologies to anyone who showed up for Bounskee Night at Calapooia Brewing Co. (apologies to you, as well) last Monday. Last month was pretty hectic for me. I got my wires crossed and my memory reverted to when Calapooia Bounskee Night was on Tuesdays- so that’s when I showed up and told people to come though the correct info was also out there. Feeling pretty foolish about that! šŸ˜–

That said, Tuesday was pretty fun! Though it started slow and no one but me played for the first hour, 7 people joined and we all had a great time. First-timer Brenna was a natural, scoring 260 in the High Score Contest and winning the Overflow contest with an excellent score of 2. Caden and Toni also scored well in Overflow with 4 and 8, respectively. Q showed up and took the baller chip for the High Score Contest with a score of 310. He also accepted my challenge to a bout of the new ā€œStreet Fighterā€ Bounskee (maybe Bounskee Boxing? Still considering the name…). We both started with 200HP and the difference between our shots (one at a time each on the classic version) determined the damage dealt. I stepped into the ring with a strong start and took the bout, but Q made a pretty good comeback and it was close! The scoreboard I made for it served its function, but I hadn’t tested it and it could be better so I’ll be making a couple adjustments to the design.

Our run of Bounskee Nights in the atrium at Calapooia Brewing is over now, but we have 2 other monthly Bounskee Nights in the area and may pick up another in Albany if we find a suitable venue whose schedule aligns. In the meantime, you can play Bounskee in all its forms at Crazy Dough on 2nd Mondays and at BENCHWARMERS BAR & GRILL on 2nd Tuesdays. Hope to skee you there!

Michael Michael Avery was the first brave community member to step up for the Boss Battle Community Challenge against the Landhog (and one of the very few to get chronicled on video). Thank you Ang Cook for the footage!

It couldn’t have gone better if I planned it… Actually, I did plan it! And it did go better than I expected! 😃

The first Bounskee Boss Battle Community Challenge fantasy FUNdraiser was a success! Everyone who participated had a fun and meaningful experience, we raised some money for charity, and there may even have been a little bit of magic. šŸŖ„

Not many people there knew what was coming. A high score contest with prizes for the top scores based on a story with a villain we all had to work together to defeat. A contest backed by pledge money so every ball shot by everyone who played helped raise a measurable donation to charity. Victory bonuses awarded when we collectively beat the boss - everybody who played won a prize (even I!). And all built around a simple ping pong ball toss game (with some functionally cool, custom event-themed decor). šŸ˜Ž Thank you The Hardwood Centre and Cncwoodcutters for helping with what I needed to set the scene.

When the plan finally fell into place only about 2 weeks ago, I knew it would be hard to find people to participate in a pledge-a-thon- especially for something new that has never been tested. And I knew that if everybody at the event got one free play, probably not many people would pay $5 to play again (even with cool prizes and all the money going to the event charities). So I am pretty pleased with the $430 this first fantasy FUNdraiser made out with.

There were some magical moments, for sure. I designed the challenge to be winnable (as long as people participated) based on time and average scores- 10,000 points was the number I landed on. Early on in the contest, it looked like I made it too easy. But participation wasn’t steady throughout the event and a couple hours in I started to doubt our chances. Then, the contest leader (and ultimately, the winner), Jared, whose whole family was loving the experience, rallied people to the battle. That turned the tide back in our favor and we took out the Landhog with only 15 minutes left on the clock! The rally and late victory really made things exciting toward and til the end! There was a lot to do at the larger event, but a good number of people witnessed the Landhog’s defeat and cheered. Though we didn’t make the connection until after, turns out that Jared is the brother of my Space Neighbors bandmate, Nick of Time šŸŽø May not seem magical to you, but combined with other things…

The night before, I played a show with Ludicrous Speed Ska Revue in Corvallis and after the show I shared the event and challenge with a group of people outside who were at the show. They seemed stoked on the community challenge and said they would come- but not knowing them, I had no idea if they would follow through. Though they were late to the challenge, it was Coya who threw the finishing ballāšŖļø

I really wanted us to win because there were victory bonuses if we did. Eola Hills W**e Cellars, Mid-Willamette Family YMCA, and DORE very generously offered (upon my request) to help incentivize participation by pledging to provide something meaningful IF the community challenge was successful. So with the defeat of the Landhog, everybody who played won a prize (Eola Hills w**e for the adults and a YMCA laser tag pass for the kids/teens) and DORE matched the $30 from pay-to-play-again. I had been telling people this would happen as much as I could all day, but it’s likely I missed some players with that info in the excitement and it may not have registered with others. Regardless, there was a lot of surprise and excitement when people who figured they didn’t win the contest were awarded with their prize. It was pretty magical. ✨

I tried to rally some pledge collectors before I had to prioritize other tasks, but no one else ended up asking for donations (specifically for the challenge) except me so the trophy Bounskee I made for the top pledge collector went to my friend who pledged the largest donation, Yohan. Shout out to Drew Monaco for coming in close second- both very generous donations. In total, I managed to raise $370 while grinding on the mountain of other things that needed to be done to pull this off. Turns out that $370 was a magic number for this particular challenge 🤯

$370 worked out to 3.7 cents for every point out of the 10,000 in the contest. To my astonishment and delight, that .037 multiplied by any factor of 30 up to 300 is an angel number! šŸŽ° I first noticed when I was talking to Michael on the phone and thought to calculate his pledge/score amount. 210 points=$7.77! (777 cents!) Then I did Angela’s. 120 points=$4.44! Also, Farrin (who helped me ALL day and I couldn’t have pulled this off nearly as well without- plus they got most of the good content seen above) scored 150=$5.55! It was not intentional that I sent them their victory certificate showing their battle stats at precisely 5:55 😮There were other players who scored multiples of 30 which noticeably sped up the contest’s literal aftermath.

So I knew I created a fantasy, but even I had no idea there would be REAL magic! ✨ Yesterday, I finished sending everyone their victory certificates and instructions on how to claim prizes for those I didn’t see at the end. The whole endeavor was a lot of work, a lot of fun, and brought a lot of satisfaction (to others as well as myself). But I guess my time in Bounskee Fantasyland is over…for now… (Mark your calendars for 9/20 at Trillium Family Services!)

Oh! And I did finish writing the story through the end of the battle and posted it along with the results (battle stats) on the website so you can see what this craziness was all about. https://bounskee.fun/pages/community-challenge (LINK IN BIO)

Recap of the Boss Battle against the Landhog coming soon…

But first, I have some appreciation to show. There was a LOT of hands on work to pull this off and I dropped the ball on a few important shout outs before the contest.

Big thanks to all 3 Bounskee Night venues for providing gift cards/certificates as prizes in the contest! Your support is very much appreciated and for a few lucky winners, there is still more to experience. I hope your contribution turns into some new returning customers. BENCHWARMERS BAR & GRILL Crazy Dough Calapooia Brewing Co.

And huge thanks to Mid-Willamette Family YMCA for filling a very important role. Early in the week, Eola Hills W**e Cellars & Legacy Vineyard offered to provide a bottle of w**e for each participating adult (21+) if we collectively beat the community challenge- which was awesome! But I really wanted all participants to win something if we beat the Landhog and there was nothing for kids or young adults. So I was trying to figure out a prize that most kids/teens would appreciate regardless of age.

I mentioned this to Tiffany at the Y (really just looking for more ideas on who to ask last minute) and she offered to provide a stack of laser tag passes- which I didn’t think to ask for but was perfect! Aside from the event materials I still had to make, this was the last missing piece that I couldn’t provide on my own so it was a huge relief.

Thanks again to The Hardwood Centre and Cnc Wood Cutters all the businesses and individuals who offered contributions and/or participated in any way. The event was a success! I can’t wait to post the recap, but first I’ll be figuring out the best way to distribute all the prizes I wasn’t able to hand out after the contest to people who didn’t stick around as things wrapped up- and also sort through some collected media…

Congratulations to Bounskee fam Chase and Kailey on a beautiful and fun wedding! It was great connecting with more of your family and friends. I met Chase through business and became friends over Bounskee (arguably, my better half). The first time he brought Kailey to Bounskee Night, I immediately saw they have something special. It was an honor to attend your big day and to make a few things for the occasion- thank you so much for the photo op! One notable highlight was when Chase entered the ceremony to the theme from Rocky šŸ¤©šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ Apparently, I picked the best seat because I got the first high five- almost didn’t see it coming! That will leave a mark on everyone’s memories. Well done! Wishing you two all the best in life and I look forward to watching your story continue to unfold. šŸ’šŸ’ž

In the outskirts of Salem, something’s been hollowing out the ground beneath us. We call it the ā€œLandhogā€ — 10,000 hit points of hoarding, tunneling, and bad attitude.

We found his weakness: white paint. So we loaded it into ping-pong balls, and we’re inviting the whole community to help take him down.

Presenting: the Bounskee Boss Battle Community Challenge at A Party to Change the World

Here’s how it works: šŸŽÆ 10 shots per play, first play free! Pay to play again šŸ’” Every point chips away at the Landhog’s HP — live scoreboard all day šŸ† Prizes for the highest scores šŸ’° Every dollar you pay to play goes straight to charity ✨ Hit the 10,000-point goal, and that pay-to-play money gets matched (thank you Discover: Oregon Real Estate | Powered by PLACE ) šŸŽ We’re sweetening the grand prize if we beat him — and lining up more bonuses from local businesses, so stay tuned…

You don’t even need to be there to be part of it — become a pledge collector and get friends & family to pledge toward the community’s total score, wherever they are in the world. All proceeds are going to: the Boys & Girls Club (Corvallis, Albany, and Salem), Jackson Street Youth Services, and Safe Haven Humane Society.

Saturday, July 18 Ā· Eola Hills Legacy Estate Vineyard, Salem, OR

Comment ā€œI’m inā€ and we’ll see you there — or grab a pledge form and join from anywhere. See the story, details, and get your pledge form here: https://bounskee.fun/pages/community-challenge
