Tango tells a timeless story about love, passion, and yearning. Explored through music and movement, tango is the most intimate of ballroom dances. Originating in the 1880s along the Río de la Plata, the natural border between Argentina and Uruguay, the tango was born in the impoverished port areas of these countries. Popular primarily in underground nightlife scenes, the tango was controversial because of its perceived sexual overtones and, by the end of 1913 when the tango made its way to Europe, the dance teachers who had introduced the dance to Paris were banished from the city… Yet the sensual dance of tango had made its mark and would go on to become one of the most recognizable and beloved dance styles worldwide.
