Ta**us was not originally founded as an armaments company. It started in 1939 as Forjas Ta**us in São Leopoldo, Brazil, operating as a general tool and die metal forging plant before producing its first revolver, the Model 38101SO, in 1941. This model was initially produced for local Brazilian military and law enforcement purchase before Ta**us expanded to commercial exports in the 1950s and 1960s.
In 1974, Beretta won a major contract to manufacture small arms for the Brazilian military. As part of the deal, Beretta built a state-of-the-art factory in São Paulo. When the contract ended in 1980, Ta**us bought the entire plant—including all the original tooling, technical drawings, and machinery. Ta**us used these exact assets to build the PT-92, which is why it so closely mirrors the Beretta 92.
Ta**us became the first major manufacturer in 1984 to offer a lifetime repair policy for handguns.
Before this, repair warranties in the industry were normally limited by original ownership or strict time windows.
While often thought of primarily for budget polymer pistols, Ta**us is a massive player in wheelguns. According to industry manufacturing and import reports, Ta**us accounts for over 40% to 60% of all revolvers sold in the United States in a given year.
