These kids are absolute inspirations! I can’t say enough good things about all of them. They show up days after day and do hard stuff, they put them selves in situations where they have to push through challenges, overcomes obstacles and rise above dilemmas your average person will never face in their lifetime. I am always so impressed with their wisdom, insight and humor, and to say it’s a pleasure and an honor to coach them as they grow and learn on these mats is a huge understatement.

Special thank you to all the parents who entrust us with this task and responsibility, and who keep making time in their busy schedules to bring their kids to train so consistently.

Words of wisdom for the day, paraphrased from the TwinJitsu podcast episode with Ellee Beckman:
Coaching kids is a performance. It doesn’t mean you aren’t genuine, but it doesn’t matter what kind of day you were having. When it’s time to be with the kids, you have to put on the guise of a Disney character for that period of time. Like any one in the performance or public speaking professions knows, at the end of the day, it’s not just something we love and are passionate about, it’s a job, it’s a business, and it’s a responsibility.

I love these kids. I am so fortunate to be able to coach them and watch as they develop and grow, not just as the amazing athletes and submission grappling students that they are, but also, as the funny, brilliant, kind and compassionate humans that they are. I am grateful to Verde Valley BJJ for creating a space where we can all come together and learn this amazing art of Jiu Jitsu, and where I can hone and refine my skills as both a student and as a coach. We are building something special here!

Rolling with my friend and training partner, Katherine. We’ve been training together for years at this point, sometimes going for hard rounds, sometimes going at it a bit easier.

On this day, we were both dealing with some minor injuries so we agreed to have more of an exploratory, flow round.

Being able to modulate, scale and adapt intensity and goals based on our training partners and how they are feeling is an important part of the journey, and one of the things I value so much about our amazing community here at Verde Valley Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Major congratulations to Jocellynn F. from Route 66Jiu Jitsu for taking gold in her bracket and gold overall in the Absolute division at today’s Training Grounds competition at Verde Valley Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Way to go young lady!

It was awesome to watch her dominate!
