Tonight we started the Fall Series of the 2026 EYC Beetle Cat Season, also called the Harris Sweepstakes after EYC member and "Peppiest Pappy" Tom Harris, who in 1942 started the tradition of collecting $1 from each adult male sailor in the final Beetle Cat "Peppy Pappy" race of the season, with the cash awarded to the race winner with the expectation that he donate the money to the EYC juniors. The tradition carried on through at least the late 1960s. As the Fall Series is the end of our Beetle season for the year, we continue to call it the Harris Sweepstakes.
Tonight, 9 boats competed in three races, starting at 6pm and finishing before the 718pm sunset. Bill S. in SCARAB won the night with 6 points, followed by Jim M. in KAT with 7 points and Jeff in NEWSANCE with 8 points. Four more weeks before we put the boats to bed for the year!
