A Lesson in Nutrition from Our Own History.

By the time of the American Revolution, we had well over 100 years of breeding and eating under our belts. Many of us have our own picture of what the colonists looked like lining up against the most advanced war machine of its day, the Redcoats. We often think ragtag fighters or old men fighting to fill numbers etc.
What we have never been taught is the nutritional differences between each army. Remember the colonists were from the same lands originally so there shouldn't be much difference, right? Wrong!
British and supporting troops from various places in Europe had already been on feudal peasant diets for centuries. Enter the American fighter, standing on average 3" taller and 15-20 pounds heavier than the average British infantryman. George Washington stood 6'2" at 210 lbs. while the average redcoat was 5'6" and 145 lbs.
Same countries of origin and race, what happened in 100 years? Nutrition happened! In Europe, meat and game were reserved for the wealthy and ruling classes. The average person existed on cheap grains and carbohydrates with very limited diversification of fruits and vegetables.
In America colonial fighters were raised on endless meat; we consumed pork, beef and venison at ridiculous rates. We backed that up with eggs, turkey, chicken, rabbit, squirrel, bear, sheep and wild fish. Even our beer had additional things to fortify it. We added spruce tips to it (vitamin C to prevent scurvy), molasses, pumpkin and indigenous herbs to boost vitamin profile. We also consumed vast quantities of dairy like raw milk, cheeses, heavy cream, and real full fat butter hand churned. We also had rich soil that would grow endless vegetables and fruits.
Now before you say yeah, but they were unhealthy eating all that. Records which we have numerous shows that American colonists on that same diet lived 8-10 years longer than their British counterparts.
100 years later we studied the Plains tribes who lived off bison and much of the same foods. Results – they were the tallest people on the planet at that time! Feed a population enough meat and they become giants. Feed it grains and bread and it grows halflings.

Americans you have forgotten, you descend from tough, self-reliant people who thrived on real food, hard work, and unprocessed grit which conquered a continent—it's in your blood. You come from that stock—eat like it.

📊So we had a tie on the poll for Yoked Shoulder program & the 12 week bench PR Program so I will be writing both!

✅️Message me through the Body by Barracks app and I will populate the program you want directly to you.

I will NOT send both at the same time because if you run both we will run into issues with shoulder overuse & potential injuries.

One priority at a time! 💯

🛢Let's compare oils for cooking specifically looking at polyunsaturated fats, (PUFA's) which is just a fancy word for industrial waste byproduct.

🧬Over time, PUFA's build up oxidative stress — basically, your body gets bombarded by unstable molecules that cause wear and tear, inflammation, and damage to your arteries, organs, and tissues. Think of it like rust forming inside your body.

Palm Oil: ~9-10% PUFA
Lard (Pork Fat): ~9-11% PUFA
Olive Oil: ~8-12% PUFA (mostly low)
Avocado Oil: ~12-14% PUFA
Peanut Oil: ~30-33% PUFA
Canola Oil: ~28-35% PUFA
Soybean Oil: ~50-60% PUFA
Corn Oil: ~55-60% PUFA
Sunflower Oil (regular): ~60-70% PUFA
Safflower Oil: ~70-75%+ PUFA (highest among common oils)
⬇️

Real, Raw Butter: 4% PUFA
⬇️

✅️ Beef Tallow: 3% PUFA for the win! Handles heat the best without oxidation & contains fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E) and choline.

🐄 All ruminant animals have low levels of PUFAs in their body (adipose) fats compared to non-ruminants like pigs, chickens, or seed oils. Seems like the Creator knows a lil more than the food/chemical industry.

🔥 Guess What’s Missing in Gatorade & PowerAde?

It’s that time of year again — when heat illnesses spike.

~9,000 time-loss heat illnesses occur each year among U.S. high school athletes across multiple sports. Football accounts for the vast majority (~70%), with a rate ~11x higher than other sports combined. Most cases happen during August preseason practices (not games), especially in hot/humid conditions, and many require ER visits or hospitalization.
Yet for many athletes, I see this over & over because the issue isn’t just dehydration — it’s magnesium deficiency.

Facts:

Roughly 48–52% of the U.S. population already has inadequate magnesium intake.
Athletes lose significantly more through sweat (3–20+ mg per liter) and need 10–20% more magnesium daily than sedentary people.

How low magnesium hurts performance and safety:

Temperature Regulation: Magnesium helps muscles relax, supports efficient sweating, and promotes proper blood flow for cooling. Without enough, core temperature rises faster, sweating becomes less effective, and fatigue + cramp risk increase. 💧
Hydration: Magnesium helps cells hold onto fluids and maintain electrolyte balance. Low levels worsen dehydration, cause fluid shifts, and lead to quicker exhaustion.

🔄This creates a vicious cycle: poorer cooling + faster dehydration = higher risk of overheating.

It doesn’t stop there. Low magnesium is also linked to significantly higher rates of muscle tears (strains), tendon issues, and ligament injuries. Calcium triggers muscle contraction — magnesium allows relaxation. Without balance, muscles stay tighter, lose elasticity, and absorb force poorly during sprints, cuts, or deceleration. Supplementation has shown protective effects against muscle damage in athletes.

Recommended Intake for Athletes (Especially Outdoor/Hot Weather):

Target 350+ mg per day, with heavy sweaters often needing 400–450 mg during intense summer training.
A magnesium blend (containing 3–5 well-absorbed forms like glycinate, citrate, and malate) is ideal for broad benefits.

✅Coaches & Parents: Prioritizing magnesium can make a night-and-day difference. Better temperature regulation, fewer cramps, reduced soft-tissue injuries, and improved recovery. Give your athletes this edge.

🚱Gatorade alone doesn't cut it...

Stay safe out there this season. 💪

Char on a steak contains heterocyclic amines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These compounds, in extremely high doses, in isolated laboratory conditions, in rats, have shown carcinogenic effects.

The doses used in those studies, scaled to human equivalents, would require you to consume the charred outer crust of approximately several thousand steaks per day for the rest of your life.

Humans have been cooking meat over open fire for somewhere between two hundred thousand and a million years. The crust on a roasted joint, the bark on a brisket, the blackened edges of a chop pulled from the embers: this is the food our species was built around.

If burnt-edge beef caused cancer at the rate the headlines imply, we would not be here to read the headlines.

Eat the steak.

Enjoy the crust.
