Spent a couple of days this week fishing for Smallmouth and Steelhead in Lake Erie tributaries. Some may recognize the Catt. Primarily I strip flies using an 8 wt rod. Olive crystal buggers worked well on Steelhead. The Smallies jumped all over my Smallmouth Creeper pattern. It’s a pattern that I developed last year. See the close up photo.

Team “Lanier on the Fly” consisting of my fishing partner (Chuck Bishirjian) and myself won the 2023 “Southern Striper Open” this past weekend (March 25-26) held on Lake Sidney Lanier. The tournament benefited "Project Healing Waters" which supports wounded Vets in the Southeast.
Our winning Stripers measured one @ 31”, one @ 31” (+ a nudge), and one @ 30”. We also landed another nice fish @ 28.5”. Our total point score of 92, on a best three fish basis (in inches), was an all time tournament record over all four annual tournaments to date. We also won the Big Fish category.
About 30-35 boats participated mostly consisting of two anglers per boat. It was a fun tournament!
Personally, my set up for the tournament consisted of a 9 wt Redington Predator rod, Redington Rise reel, Rio Outbound Short line, 20 # fluorocarbon tippet, and self-tied Clouser Minnows. Fishing strategy provided by Chuck Bishirjian ([email protected]).
Thanks to Alpharetta Outfitters who organized the tournament but a special shout out needs to go to Jeff Wright, Ryan, and many others who helped put the tournament together.

After a week of generally poor weather and wind on Lake Lanier, Today, I landed this 29” beauty. Two 29” Stripers in the last two trips on the pond. HUGE girth on this one! What was really unique is that it was hooked in 40-50 foot water using a Scientific Anglers triple density sinking line. ❤️ these fly lines! The fly? A chartreuse and white Closer minnow.
