Why some people get promoted almost immediately, while others stay stuck for years

There’s a pattern I see over and over with high-performing leaders.
A single comment. One conversation. That’s all it takes.
It starts small… almost invisible. Feels completely rational.
And then it builds in layers, quietly, until you’re making decisions that don’t look anything like the leader you thought you were becoming.

We've all been there.
It's been insanely busy.
The last 3 weeks, you spent more time on a plane than at home.
The work didn't stop while you were gone.
Whatever you were unable to complete by 1AM after late work dinners on your trip, simply piled up waiting for your return to the office.
So many challenges to resolve within the organization - restructure, budgets, top and bottom lines, new launches, product crises, hiring, etc.
And as a senior leader, you are expected to anticipate, strategize, lead, and resolve these challenges.
On top of it all, things seem to be slipping through the cracks at home.
Your children miss you. You've missed the last 5 class activities, all scheduled for 10:30 AM on Tuesdays.
You constantly feel behind on planning birthdays, playdates, event sign-ups, etc.
And perhaps so much more.
You may be thinking, "Do I continue to do this? Do I even want to be at this current level, talk less of a promotion?"
Shouldn't I just:
Stop aspiring to more?
Take a lower level, "more manageable" role?
Start my own business?
Should I just quit and stay home full time?
All great options.
And because you are in the driver's seat here, you don't need permission from anyone on what to do.
My intention here is to share some considerations with you as you contemplate any radical changes in your career and life direction.
Making any big decisions from a place of heightened emotion will rarely result in the outcome you truly want.
All day, you are likely faced with lots of emotionally charged situations. Interactions with your leadership, team, colleagues, and vendors. As these pile up, you may find yourself feeling frustrated, exhausted, angry, resentful, sad, maybe even apathetic. If you don't learn how to move through these phases gracefully, they build up into intense pressure. Eventually, you will feel a strong need to relieve this pressure. And guess what will relieve the pressure? Quitting. Walking away. This is why people often say, "as soon as I quit my job, I felt a weight lift". Of course, it will feel like the right decision because you will feel better in the moment.
