When we move to a new country we are bound to make mistakes.

Thankfully, a lot of people have moved to the US before you and they’ve made plenty of mistakes for you to learn from.

Here's is a list of things that you should avoid making when you first move to the US.

1. SSN or the Social security number is one of the most if not the most important things you need to get as soon as you move to the US.

While people coming here on a dependent visa may not be eligible directly for a SSN, they can apply for a ITIN.

These documents are required to open a bank account, get a Credit card, apply for a house on rent and many other day-to-day activities.

2. Opening a bank account should be a no brainer. The sooner you open a bank account, the sooner you can apply for a Debit, Credit Card and you can start building your Credit History.

If you’ve done your research correctly, you’ll know that building your Credit History in the US is super important from a long-term perspective.

3. The public transport system outside major cities is terrible. If you’re not living in the bigger cities chances are you’ll need a car.

4.Research about the Visa you are using to enter the US. I have come across plenty of dependent visa holders who had no idea that they couldn’t work on their visa status or that they might have to wait for a few years before they can apply for a work permit and start working legally in the country.

5. The cost-of-living in the United States is higher than in many other countries, and the cost can differ greatly depending on what region you are moving to.

Do some research to find out what the standard cost-of-living will be like in the area where you are moving.

These are some of the mistakes you should avoid when you first move to the US.

While this may not be an exhaustive list.

I think it’s at least a good starting point.

The one thing that makes you a great mother is being the best version of yourself, because that’s what your kids will see and appreciate as they grow.

And witnessing you fulfill your dreams and reach your full potential will give them the courage to do the same.

I hope you unlock the path to prosperity and avoid financial pitfalls by overcoming common retirement missteps as an Immigrant.

The journey of an immigrant is not an easy one.

It is a journey filled with courage, hard work, and determination.

For many immigrants, the road to success starts with nothing more than a suitcase of clothes and a dream for a better life for themselves and their families.

As immigrants, we face unique challenges, from language barriers and cultural differences to financial struggles and legal hurdles.

But despite these obstacles, we press on, determined to create a better future for ourselves and our loved ones.

For many of us, this means working tirelessly to secure a job, to build a career, and to provide for our families.

We do this not only to achieve our own goals, but also to ensure that our children have a better life than we did.

We want our children to have the opportunities that we never had, and we want them to be proud of their immigrant heritage.

Through hard work and determination, we are able to turn that suitcase of clothes into a life, with regular paychecks and a sense of security for ourselves and our families.

And though the journey may be tough, we know that it is worth it, not only for ourselves, but for the generations that will come after us.

So here's to all the immigrants out there, who have faced adversity with courage and determination, who have turned their dreams into reality, and who have made sacrifices to ensure a better future for themselves and their families.

Your hard work and perseverance are an inspiration to us all.

For many immigrants, planning for retirement can be a daunting task, with several factors that stand in the way of achieving their retirement goals.

These factors can include a range of challenges that are unique to the immigrant experience, including uncertainty around immigration status, limited access to retirement options as well as family obligations.

Despite these challenges, it's important for immigrants to prioritize retirement planning and take steps to overcome these obstacles.

By seeking out resources and support, such as financial education classes, working with a financial advisor, and exploring alternative retirement savings options, immigrants can take control of their financial futures and achieve their retirement goals.

Planning for retirement is an important part of securing your future and achieving your financial goals, but as an immigrant, the path to retirement can be a unique journey.

There are often different challenges and opportunities that come with being an immigrant, and these factors can impact your retirement planning in a variety of ways.

You may be navigating a complex system of visas and work permits, which can impact your ability to save for retirement.

You may also be supporting family members both in the United States and abroad, which can impact your financial situation and retirement planning goals.

Whatever your individual circumstances may be, it's important to take a holistic approach to retirement planning as an immigrant. This means taking into account not only your financial situation, but also your cultural background, personal values, and retirement goals.

By taking these steps and being mindful of the unique challenges and opportunities of your own personal journey, you can help ensure a comfortable and secure retirement for yourself and your family.

Let me know in the comments some of the issues that have stopped you from saving for retirement as an African in the diaspora.
