There's a saying in martial arts it is ideal to have 3 types of training partners for whatever discipline your training. One who's ass you can kick, one who is your equal and one who kicks your ass. This gives you three looks in terms of skill level. You don't always want to train with partners who kick your ass because you won't get a chance to improve your offense and the same holds true for the other side. If you only train with people you're better at then your never really going to get better and progress your game. When you leave your ego at the door I promise your game will grow. I've seen many guys hold themselves back in regards to training because of their ego's.

Vegan pasta dish. This recipe is similar to the stir fry dish I posted a few weeks ago instead of brown rice and Asian bbq sauce this one is on a bed of whole wheat pasta. Ingredients are broccoli, baked tofu, and red bell pepper. Macros are about 30 grams of protein, 15 grams of fat, and about 50 carbs.

[05/22/19]   I'm still prioritizing the lower body and starting with the more complex movement out of the 3 exercises in this routine, beginning with the single leg Romanian deadlift. I like to do these single leg exercises because they are good for helping imbalances in your hips. Next, are sumo deadlifts, these put more of an emphasis on your glutes than traditional deadlifts. I finish off with incline dumbbell presses for my chest as I am giving my back good work out with the deadlifts. Always make sure to do opposing muscle groups. I see many guys that neglect their back because they are so obsessed with a big chest. If you train your back as much as you train your chest, it will compliment your bench press. My lats have been sore many times from days I went heavy on bench press specifically incline press due to the angle. Your back is required to stabilize when you press, so it's a secondary muscle involved in a bench press. Happy lifting.

[05/20/19]   Here's today's workout. Still emphasizing the legs and today was more hamstrings and lowered back with the stiff leg deadlifts. After that, a 3 set press pull sequence of close grip incline barbell press followed up with spine grip bent over barbell row. I pyramid the weight up every set and drop my reps accordingly.

These were done as a circuit one to the next for 3 sets.
🔺1 arm overhead kettlebell swings 8 reps each arm🔹
🔺Staggered stance stiff leg deadlift (pyramid going up in weight starting with 12 reps each leg)🔹
🔺Prone cable lat pull (pyramid going up in weight starting with 12 reps each arm)🔹
🔺Turkish get up 6 reps each arm (weight stays the same)🔹
🔺Standing 1 arm cable press (pyramid going up in weight starting at 12 reps each arm)🔹
🔺Cable tricep extension 15 reps to failure🔹
The pyramiding is done to add strength/muscle to the primary muscle involved. The weight with the kettlebell swings and Turkish gets ups stays the same to work on form and posture. All are compound movements except the tricep extension. JP is 51.

One of my all-time favorite quotes because it is so applicable to training and not just martial arts. The same holds true for weight training as far as picking basic movements like squats, deadlifts, bench press, to name a few. If you don't understand or have the basics mastered of something, then how can you expect to grasp a more advanced technique or movement. Your foundation is compromised if you don't have the basics down, and this holds true for just about anything you strive for in life. It's the journey, not the destination that forges you along the way. I can guarantee you this friend after the long road of pursuit is done, and you take your ear off the grindstone to look up you will see a bad mofo staring back at you in the mirror. Stay thirsty for everything and keep training.

Focusing on my legs more. Front barbell split squats target your quads more with the load placed on the front of your body. I superset these with the reverse hyper to finish off the hamstrings and glutes. I will pause at the top of the movement and squeeze my glutes hard. This is an excellent lower body superset to add to your routine on leg day. If you're not adding single leg exercises to your training regimen, then you should. It will increase your strength in other areas like the deadlift and squat.

Homemade vegan cheeseburger with sweet potato fries. Macros are about 30g of protein, 55 carbs and 15g of fat. It looks like a gut bomb; it's actually not. The carbs are all relatively low glycemic except the ketchup which has a little sugar.

Here's a throwback and it's not Thursday. Me as a bulky 4 stripe white belt next to Helio Gracie circa 2004. I was fortunate to meet the founder of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Helio Gracie before he passed in 2009. He was about 91 years old in this pic, and it was at the end of a 3-day seminar he did with a couple of his grandsons from the Gracie clan. He would let students half his age, and twice his size get on top from the full mount and try to submit him. Needless to say, they were unsuccessful. That's what practicing martial arts for over 70 years will do for you. The guy was still a beast at 91. Respect.

[05/11/19]   I honestly haven't been training martial arts as much lately as I have been lifting weights more during my free time. I put the strength training on the back burner to martial arts for a few years and lost a lot of mass and strength. I have been lifting way more consistently this past year. Doing 1 rep max asymmetrical dumbbell hammer curl to press with 70 lbs. Slowly getting my strength back and always working on something to improve. Crazy I forgot how much easier life is when your stronger. 👍

Legs, legs, legs. Musculoskeletal imbalances such as an elevation of the hip (lateral pelvic tilt) on the left side are quite common. Single leg split squats can be a great exercise to help correct imbalances in your hips. I finished these sets with 15 strict reps of dumbbell stiff leg deadlifts for the hamstrings and lumbar erectors.

[05/06/19]   I will often film my clients performing a movement we are trying to improve. Shooting them can often give them a better sense of proprioception, which is the bodies mechanism of realization of self-movement and body position. It's "feeling" where your body is at while moving. World class athletes typically have a well-developed sense of proprioception. You can train someone to improve their sense of proprioception by giving them a visual of their movement with film or a mirror. Gyms have mirrors all over them for a reason.

The pushups Caroline can do in this video are a progression from when she started. Her form isn't perfect, but it is getting better. I filmed her doing the movement to show her what her neck and body is doing to help her feel the correct position while she is doing the pushup. Her neck should remain neutral, and she didn't realize it was dropping forward when she started the movement. She needs a little more strength in the upper body, and she will be able to do full range pushup.
