Paving the way in style and gold boots, the Alcorn State University Golden Girls made history as the first-ever HBCU majorette dance team, setting the stage for the iconic style we know today. Debuting at the 1968 Orange Blossom Classic, they brought elegance, precision, and unmatched energy to the field, forever changing the game. Affectionately called “the mothers” by fans and fellow dance lines, their signature gold boots have become a symbol of legacy, grace, and HBCU excellence. Revolutionizing dance and making history, Katherine Dunham was a force in the world of dance—choreographer, activist, and innovator. In 1931, she founded Ballet N***e, the first Black ballet company in the U.S., and later became the first Black choreographer at the Metropolitan Opera. A pioneer in folk and ethnic dance, she introduced African and Caribbean influences to American choreography, shaping modern dance as we know it today. Beyond the stage, Dunham was a fierce activist, using her voice to protest segregation and advocate for Haitian refugees. Her groundbreaking work earned her the Presidential Medal of Arts and the NAACP’s Lifetime Achievement Award, cementing her legacy as one of the most influential figures in dance history.
