Why does your foot start shaking during long isometric holds? 🦶

That shaking is often a sign of fatigue and increased neuromuscular demand.

As the muscles responsible for maintaining foot and ankle position begin to fatigue, your nervous system has to continually adjust how it recruits motor units to maintain force. The result? That visible shaking.

This is one reason I love isometrics for building foot and Achilles strength and capacity.

Long-duration isometrics can help us:

• Build tolerance to sustained loading
• Strengthen the foot and ankle musculature
• Load the calf–Achilles complex in a controlled environment
• Improve our ability to maintain force and position under fatigue

Your foot and Achilles have to tolerate thousands of repetitive forces when you run, sprint, cut, and play soccer.

Strength isn’t just about producing force.

It’s also about having the capacity to keep producing it.

That’s why isometrics stay in the program. šŸ¦¶āš½ļø

Keeping agility fun with this reactive multi directional drill.

9–10 months post-ACL surgery—and now the work is becoming much more soccer-specific. āš½ļø

Mauri is currently in the late-stage return-to-performance phase. At this stage, we’re progressing beyond basic strength and straight-line running into:

• Higher-intensity plyometrics
• Sprinting and fitness under fatigue
• Deceleration and landing control
• Planned and reactive changes of direction
• Soccer-specific movement patterns

The goal isn’t simply to complete harder drills. He must demonstrate that he can produce force, absorb force and repeatedly execute these movements with confidence—without pain, swelling or a negative response during the following 24 hours.

Being 9–10 months post-surgery does not automatically mean an athlete is ready to play. Before progressing into unrestricted soccer, Mauri still needs to clear each stage, tolerate full team training and show that his performance can hold up under the speed, fatigue, unpredictability and contact of the game.

The timeline matters, but readiness must be earned through objective testing and consistent performance.

Building better movers, not just faster athletes.

Today we focused on improving lateral change of direction through a simple progression.

We started with crossover mechanics to help the girls become more efficient moving and accelerating laterally. From there, we went into lateral hurdle jumps into reactive single-leg hops and bounds, challenging their ability to produce, absorb, and redirect force.

Research supports the use of plyometric training for improving change-of-direction performance, including specifically in female soccer players and female team-sport athletes (Ramirez-Campillo et al., 2020; Lin et al., 2025). (PubMed)

But soccer isn’t pre-planned. Players have to see something, make a decision, and react. That’s why we finished by putting those qualities into a fun reactive game. Research also distinguishes reactive agility from pre-planned change of direction because of the added perceptual and decision-making demands (Fiorilli et al., 2017). (PubMed)
