Immerse yourself into better hip mobility? Absolutely.
The pool offers you a fantastic opportunity to recalibrate and readjust the behavior of your hips.
Buoyancy helps the hips by acting as an uplifting force that reduces body weight and gravitational stress on the hip joints, while also keeping the lower body elevated in the water. You can suddenly do magical things like squat with your feet on a wall!
So what are you waiting for? This buoyancy supported squat and leg extension combo even has some great postural stability work with the breath integrated right into it!
SETUP:
β‘οΈ Hands shoulder-width apart on pool ledge.
β‘οΈ Hop both feet up on the wall, and place the balls and toes of the feet on the wall hips width or wider.
MOVE:
π« Exhale + contract abdomen + pull into a squat, bending your elbows, flexing your hips and knees with your knees turning out along with your toes turning out. This outward / external rotation comes from the hips.
π« Inhale + expand chest + lift sternum + pull your chest up with arms straight + push through your heels to extend your legs. The heels don't need to touch the pool wall. As legs extend, turn through hips (internal rotation) to align knees with toes turning to point back up to the ledge.
π Repeat for multiple breaths and notice the increasing hip mobility!
π‘ Exhale + abdomen contraction is "zipper-like". When you inhale + expand your chest you don't want to lose the "zipper" too quickly. This active breath shaping is what supports postural stability in this movement!
π³ Do you inhale & lose your "zipper" too fast? Keep working on it, belly breathing does not buy you anything when you are doing movements that require stability and mobility! π€
Because guess what? The way you are with your breath affects the way you are with your spine which affects the way you are with your hips...
