Porch, coffee, dog. That's the whole plan.

Quarters in your pocket, letters in your hand.

Remember piling into the back of the station wagon, the windows already fogged with anticipation? The smell of Mom's homemade popcorn, smuggled in under a blanket, mixed with the sweet exhaust of nearby cars. That crackling speaker, perched precariously on the window, always added a certain static charm to the latest blockbuster. Back then, under a blanket of stars and a flickering screen, the drive-in wasn't just a movie theater, it was a summer ritual. Now, with our surround sound and streaming services, I sometimes miss that imperfect, shared magic.

Remember wrestling those stubborn metal ice cube trays out of the freezer? The distinct *crack* as you twisted the handle, followed by the clatter of icy squares hitting the enamel sink...sometimes launched across the kitchen entirely! Back then, a chipped fingernail was a small price to pay for perfectly frosty iced tea on a sweltering summer day. Now, our refrigerators effortlessly churn out ice on demand, but I still miss the simple satisfaction – and the occasional frozen fingertip – of those old trays. I think it tasted better that way, somehow, like we earned it.

Remember when Grandma came to visit and the whole house shifted? Suddenly, the TV volume went down, our slang vanished, and "yes ma'am" and "no sir" flowed like honey. I can almost smell the lavender scent of her handkerchief as she'd pat my cheek, her eyes twinkling, and I knew better than to slouch or interrupt. Back in my day, showing respect wasn't a performance; it was woven into the very fabric of our lives. Nowadays, it feels like that gentle reverence has faded a bit, replaced with something… different.

Sitting on the steps and watching the world pass by taught us how to be still. You waved at neighbors, counted cars, and let time move at its own pace. There was beauty in just noticing.

Not every moment needed to be busy. Sometimes the quiet was the point. There was a pride in doing things well, even when they were small. Care showed up in the details and in the way people showed up for each other. That kind of pride lasts. I smile every time this comes to mind, because it is a snapshot of a slower, kinder rhythm.

We didn't have much growing up, but we had what mattered. We learned to be grateful for what we had and respectful of those who provided it. Kids today will never understand how different things were back then. Do you remember meals like this from your childhood?

Sometimes I think we've overcomplicated things that used to be pretty straightforward. Life seemed a lot simpler when common sense was more common. Do you ever feel like the world has gotten a bit too complicated?

Remember when chickenpox was just part of growing up? Your mom would practically throw a party to get all the kids sick at once and be done with it! We survived just fine and nobody panicked. Times sure have changed. Do you remember your chickenpox story?
