Nothing better than this feeling.

There’s a lot that goes into keeping these horses feeling their best, and I’m grateful to have Tatiana from Royal Hands Equine Services in our corner. Having another set of experienced eyes and hands on the horses makes such a difference, especially during a busy competition season.

In the meantime, we’ll settle for building a strong foundation with the basics.

One thing I never have to think twice about is my tack. I trust Voltaire Design USA & Canada to keep me balanced and my horses comfortable, whether we’re schooling at home or competing somewhere new.

Looks Don’t Lie might be one of the most versatile mares, full stop.

Eventing? Check. Show jumping? Check. Hunter ring? Also check.

Lilly is the kind of Thoroughbred who gives her rider plenty of options, and I think she would be a really fun partner for someone who doesn’t want to pick just one discipline.

I know I sound like a broken record, but I really don’t know what I’d do without my Red Barn leather reins from KL Select.

They’re the reins I reach for every day, but when the forecast says rain and we’re headed to cross country, I’ve even taken them off my own bridles to hand to students, because I trust these reins 100% in the rain.

That’s a pretty good endorsement 🤷‍♀️

One good cross-country school doesn't make an event horse.

I like getting young horses back out before too much time has passed. Give them a few days to think about what they learned, then come back and let them realize, “Oh… I’ve done this before.”

That repetition builds confidence. Eventually, the jumps become just another part of the job.

And that’s the goal.

One of the last things I like to do before finishing my cross-country warm-up is add in turning.

Broken lines and small fences help make sure the horse is listening to my aids, staying in front of my leg, and most importantly, hunting the flags instead of just following the track.

By the time we leave the warm-up, I don't want to be wondering if we can make the turn. I want both horse and rider thinking, "Yep, we've already done this."

There's almost always a grid set up in my arena… and that's no accident.

Grids make it easy to focus on one piece of the puzzle at a time. They help horses develop strength, improve their technique, and learn how to use their bodies without the rider having to manufacture every stride.

With Fergus, we're working on encouraging him to stretch across the oxers and jump a little wider. The exercises stay simple, but each one has a purpose.

We’re so excited to welcome Coat Defense to the Hablyn Hills Eventing Team!

I’ve used Coat Defense for years, especially their Daily Preventative Powder after winter rides to help keep skin issues at bay when horses are sweating and then going back under blankets.

Now that they’re officially part of the team, I’m looking forward to putting the rest of the Coat Defense lineup to work around the barn!
