Killingly Pride alive and well. Future HOF?

FROM THE SPORTS DEPARTMENT: (GROTON) — With a 1-0 shutout of No. 5 Fitch on Thursday evening in Groton at Fitch High School, the No. 3 Killingly baseball team capped off a 17-2 regular season by capturing the 2021 ECC Championship.

Earlier in the day, Killingly traveled to Waterford for a showdown with the No. 2 Lancers, and handed them a lopsided 13-2 defeat. In that game junior starter Jay Grzysiewicz tossed a complete game for the win, while a six-run fifth inning opened the doors which led to the blowout.

Following the win, the team jumped on a bus and made the 20-minute drive to Fitch High School, where the Falcons awaited them following their 7-1 victory against No. 9 East Lyme.

With ace Bo Yaworski having thrown on Wednesday and Grzysiewicz earlier in the day, Killingly handed the ball to their number three starter: Cole Lavigne.

The senior responded by throwing a complete game shutout to earn the win in the biggest game of his high school career.

“After seeing what Bo and Jay did in the earlier games, I knew I had to come up big because they came up so big for our team,” shared Lavigne. “So many teams kind of doubted us because we hadn’t played ‘competition’ this season, and man, this is just a proving point for us, and we really stepped up big. Our guys just came out and killed it today, and I couldn’t be more proud of them right now.”

The ballgame was a pitcher’s duel throughout between Lavigne and Fitch senior Ramiro Zavala. The lone run came in the third inning when Yaworski lined a single into left field to score Brady Waterman.

For his performance, the Mitchell College-bound Yaworski was awarded the ECC Tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

“There’s no easy games in the ECC Tournament,” said Killingly head coach Ben Desaunlier. “I’m really proud of them I’m really proud of how we responded, especially showing up today knowing: going on the road to Waterford, going on the road to Fitch. We didn’t let the moment get too big for us, and we came in with the mentality of we know we can beat these teams, and well, we got it done.”

Killingly, who finished the regular season with a 17-2 record, now await their seeding for the upcoming CIAC Class M Tournament.

Fitch, meanwhile, who wrapped up their regular season at 12-4, also now will turn their attention to the upcoming CIAC Class L Tournament.
