Before Davidson became the bike-friendly community we know today, there was Julia Holt.

In January 1897, Holt purchased a Crescent ’97 bicycle and began learning to ride, making her the first woman identified as a cyclist in Davidson’s surviving local records.

This photograph was taken in 1909 at her wedding, held in front of the Holt family home. That house still stands today as the Copeland House on Main Street, directly across from Davidson College.

Nearly 130 years later, bicycles remain a familiar part of life around Davidson. 🚲

Some bikes make you want to pick a route. The Specialized Roll 3.0 makes you want to see where the afternoon goes.

We have one in Gloss Oak Green Metallic with Powdered Lime details, plus the light gray color shown here. The Roll’s upright riding position, wide tires, and comfortable saddle make it a great bike for cruising around Davidson. It also has eight speeds and hydraulic disc brakes when the ride takes you a little farther.

Carbon wheels do more than make your bike look fast. Their biggest advantage is aerodynamic efficiency.

Carbon fiber’s strength-to-weight ratio allows manufacturers to create deeper rim profiles that move through the air more cleanly without adding excessive weight. At higher speeds, that can reduce drag and help you maintain the same pace with less effort. In one wind-tunnel comparison, 60mm carbon wheels saved roughly 10 watts at 40 km/h versus stock aluminum wheels, which translated to just over a minute across 40 kilometers.

You may also notice quicker acceleration, more responsive handling and less weight, especially when climbing or getting back up to speed after a corner.

We had a little surprise to deliver this morning.

Every year, the Lake Norman Fondo brings riders to Davidson for a great day on the bike. Thanks to everyone who rides, volunteers and supports the event, it also gives us the opportunity to give back to local nonprofits and other deserving organizations in our community.

One of our favorite parts? We usually don’t tell the recipients ahead of time. We just show up with a check and get to enjoy the surprise with them.

Today, we joined Toby from Haerfest Coffee Roasting Co. to present a donation to Lisa, David and Zach, the folks behind Down for Doughnuts in Mooresville. Getting to share that moment with them was a pretty wonderful way to start the day.

To everyone who helps make the Lake Norman Fondo a success, thank you. Your support reaches well beyond the ride, and we’re grateful to help put it to work right here in our community.

We’ve had a hard time walking past this one without stopping to look.

The Specialized Tarmac SL9 S-Level is gorgeous, and the build backs up the looks: a FACT 10r carbon frame, Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 shifting, Roval Rapide CL III wheels, and an integrated Roval Rapide cockpit.

Specialized lists this build at 15 lb, 10.4 oz (7.1 kg), measured in a size 56. The bike here at Spirited Cyclist is a size 54, so its weight may differ slightly.

Photos are good. Seeing it in person is better. Stop by the shop and take a closer look.

The Specialized Turbo Como 4.0 in Gloss Tangerine is one of our latest arrivals, and we also have Dove Grey in stock. The Como’s upright riding position makes it a comfortable choice for cruising around Davidson, running errands, or taking the long way home.
