GMR Rec Trail Gaps & Updates 📍Fairfield, OH

The City of Fairfield, Ohio was awarded $750,000 by the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments to extend the GMRRT from Waterworks Park through Marsh Park to the intersection of River and Gray Roads. Once complete in 2027, this 11-foot-wide shared-use path will create a 12.8-mile unbroken stretch of the GMRRT to the north side of Hamilton 🚲

Additionally, MetroParks of Butler County was awarded $3.8 million to close 4.5 miles of remaining trail gaps in Fairfield, Liberty, and Lemon Townships, with construction expected between 2026 and 2030 — meaning Fairfield's trail connections to the rest of the Riverway will only keep improving!

🚧 Temporary trail closure today August 24

MCD staff will be sealing a short section of the Great Miami River Recreation Trail today along East River Road near Bobcat of Dayton as part of routine trail maintenance.

This section will be coned off and needs to remain free of bike and pedestrian traffic for about 24 hours while the sealant cures.

Trail users will need to briefly detour around this short section. Please use caution and watch for traffic if traveling through the area.

The river may be going down, but the cleanup is just beginning. 🚲

If you're ready to get back out on the Great Miami River Trail this weekend, please know that some areas are not ready for riders yet.

High water has left behind:

• Mud and silt covering sections of trail
• Sticks, logs and other debris
• Washed-out and damaged areas
• Damage around bridges and crossings
• Wet areas that still need time to dry out
• Sections that crews haven't been able to fully inspect or clean yet

We're also seeing damage at Sycamore Bridge, along with other locations throughout the corridor.

Our trail partners and maintenance crews are assessing conditions and working through cleanup, but nearly 100 miles of river and trail means conditions can vary considerably from one community to the next.

Please don't go around barricades or enter a closed section of trail. Even where the pavement looks clear ahead, there may be mud, debris or damage around the next bend.

That's something communities along the Great Miami River corridor have understood for a long time.

The Riverway connects more than 100 miles of river and paved trail with downtowns, parks, recreation and communities — and those things aren't simply amenities.

They're part of economic development.

They're part of what makes people want to live here, stay here, visit here and invest here.

🚨 The rain may have stopped. The river has not.

We love seeing people enjoy the Great Miami River — but right now, much of the river is still too high and too swift for safe recreation.

Take a look at the map. 🔴 Red means conditions are unsafe — stay out of the river.

Even where you see green or yellow, that isn't an automatic “go.” River conditions can change quickly, and you need to consider the current, floating debris, weather, water temperature, your experience and whether you can safely launch and take out.

Ultimately, you make your own decisions about when and where to recreate. Our job is to give you good information so you can make an informed one.

Before you go:

🟢 Green = use your judgment
🟡 Yellow = use your judgment and extra caution
🔴 Red = conditions are unsafe — stay out
🦺 Wear your life jacket. Every time. Not sitting in the kayak. Not strapped to the boat. Wear it.
📍 Tell someone where you're going and when you expect to return.

High, swift water is powerful. It can carry debris, hide obstacles and turn familiar stretches of river into something very different.
