Keep it simple...
Bobby Jones on Chipping
It is a mistake to try to make one club do for all kinds of chips. Always select a club with which you can pitch to the edge of the putting surface so that the club may be swung through smoothly, without jerk or hurry.
Back a bit further, since you still want to pitch to the green without spin if possible, you select a more lofted club, say a number 8, and play the ball precisely the same way. A straightforward pitch, without attempting anything fancy, is always the safest course.
There is nothing fundamental which distinguishes this stroke from any other. the initial position is entirely comfortable, the feet are close together to make the slight turn of the hips a bit easier. There is ample use of the hands in the backswing. And the crisp decisive stroke at the same time retains its smooth, flowing quality.
