Deerfield Young Warriors

Hi all, Johnny Lyons here with an exciting announcement about our expanded partnership with ALL IN Athletics!

Starting this season, the Deerfield Young Warriors will be managed as part of a new entity being formed by ALL IN Athletics. We've partnered with ALL IN for many years at the 3rd – 5th grade levels, and we're thrilled to expand that partnership to include all grade levels 3 – 8. Under the leadership of CEO Billy Welcome, ALL IN will now be responsible for day-to-day basketball operations including:

- Running tryouts and making teams* (tryouts will be in mid-October)
- Staffing coaches*
- Creating schedules*
- Collecting payments
- Uniforms
- Ongoing communication

*These will be collaborative tasks.

My dad, John Lyons, founded this program in 1994 (then the Deerfield Bulls) and has run it with tremendous pride and devotion for 30 years. He'll still be around the program, but will be taking a well-earned step back from the day-to-day. In my role as Director of Basketball, I'll work closely with Billy and ALL IN to foster a tight connection to the DHS program, from X's and O's consistency to overall philosophy and values.

The Young Warriors is a family operation, and we've long considered ALL IN part of that family. This move only strengthens our ability to continue to provide the Deerfield community with a top-flight feeder basketball program well into the future!

- Hopefully the Covid-altered seasons are a thing of the past and we look forward to a great schedule. DHS Varsity Coach McKendrick as always is a strong supporter of the Young Warriors as is his staff and will be in attendance at the tryouts.

- Players are encouraged to attend both tryouts as many as 3 teams per grade may be established.

Our goal has been and is to offer a wholesome program with talented coaches and a diverse schedule – and to leave good memories of the experience with both players and families.

🏀⛹️‍♂️Boys feeder basketball update!🏀⛹️‍♂️

The Deerfield Young Warriors feeder program is getting ready to kick off its 30th year serving the Deerfield community! As usual, we'll have 3rd - 8th grade teams, with up to 3 teams per grade.

About the program: Our mission is to provide the opportunity for boys in the Deerfield community with a serious interest in basketball to participate in accelerated competition with accelerated guidance, in an effort to prepare them to be DHS basketball players.

We recently held the 16th Annual Kick-off Feeder Tournament and despite Omnicron, it was a huge success. It probably is the biggest feeder tournament in the Chicago area. Although the entrants were down somewhat from the 120 teams that we had last time probably as a result of the pandemic, we still had 86 teams competing representing 18 different programs. The results were as follows:

We are now preparing for our 10th Annual Feeder Finale Tournament for B and B2 teams. It will take place February 25-27th and we will have anther good turnout.

🏀Happy New Year! We are looking forward to getting back on the court and wanted to provide an update to our families.

First, we are extremely aware of the surge of COVID-19 in Illinois. Our coaches and staff will continue to be extremely diligent in the protection of our players & teams, strictly following the best health practice and procedures and going above and beyond the regulations required. The health and safety of our players, staff and families is our highest priority at all times.

On behalf of all families, coaches and staff in the program, we ask that you continue to be vigilant and honest in reporting symptoms, positive test results and exposures to us. This allows us to help keep everyone involved as safe as possible. Please do not hesitate to contact us at any time with any questions.

For our kick-off tournament this weekend (5th-8th grade), we have instituted the following rule as an extra precautionary measure.

RULE: Masks must be worn in such a way as to cover both nose and mouth by all players both on the bench and when playing (exception on bench are players with asthma or chronic respiratory conditions). I am asking the referees to issue warnings to players who are obviously lapse in this way of masking and issue a 2 shot technical foul upon the second warning. After the second warning, subsequent warnings involving the same player will disqualify the player for the remainder of the game. I know some may view this as harsh but I am aware of the current worry about the Omnicom variant so am addressing some of the reasons for concern and am making the venues as safe as possible. Canlan, the operator of both tournament sites, is doing the same.

Observers of the games should also wear masks properly and should follow the well-known guidelines of social distancing also. If there is more than a one-hour lapse between games, players and families should leave the building. (Btw, Mayo Clinic and other medical entities are saying that cloth masks are not as effective against the Omicron variant as N95 or RN95 masks.) 🏀

The Young Warriors 6th, 7th & 8th grade teams still have room for players. We have had only one day of games to date so the bulk of the season is still in front of us. The next games will be at the popular Kick-off Tournament that we host from Jan 7-9. About 80 teams are already registered for that event.
