Geologic maps are pretty much what they say on the tin: maps detailing an area’s geological features, such as different types of rocks and sediments, their age, and how they’re distributed. They’re used in all sorts of ways, not just by geologists wanting to double-check how old a rock formation is, but also in understanding more about possible geological resources – like minerals – and natural hazards such as earthquakes.

That’s why making sure that they contain as much detail as they possibly can is so important – and the US Geological Survey (USGS) appears to have achieved that in its newly-released geologic map of the lower 48 states, dubbed The Cooperative National Geologic Map.

Cooperative is an appropriate name: creating such a detailed map required the help of multiple different sources, which provided over 100 preexisting geologic maps created by both the USGS and individual state geological surveys.

A tropical storm currently forming off the coast of Baja California could develop into a hurricane by next week, according to meteorologists.

KTLA weatherman Kaj Goldberg said that meteorologists are keeping a close eye on the tropical disturbance developing in the Pacific. The eye of the storm has a strong chance of forming off the coast of Baja California by Thursday, weather prediction models show.

“This is the disturbance that, if it does form and come together, could make its way right into Southern California about one week from today,” Goldberg said.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Bryan Lewis told KTLA 5 News that the National Hurricane Center predicts an 80% chance of a tropical depression with wind speeds below 38 mph forming in the area within the next 48 hours, and a 90% chance in the next seven days

A tropical storm currently forming off the coast of Baja California could develop into a hurricane by next week, according to meteorologists.

“This is the disturbance that, if it does form and come together, could make its way right into Southern California about one week from today,” Goldberg said.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Bryan Lewis told KTLA 5 News that the National Hurricane Center predicts an 80% chance of a tropical depression with wind speeds below 38 mph forming in the area within the next 48 hours, and a 90% chance in the next seven days.
Lewis said that the difference between a tropical storm and a hurricane is wind speed. A tropical storm has wind speeds of 39 to 74 mph. A hurricane has wind speeds greater than 74 mph.

“Once the depression forms, the National Hurricane Center will then likely write a discussion about it and include probabilities of tropical storm or even hurricane formation, so stay tuned for that,” Lewis said.

The storm could develop into a hurricane by Friday or Saturday, Goldberg reports. The storm might weaken by Saturday night or early Sunday morning and reach landfall in Southern California as a tropical storm. The storm would likely bring heavy rain and extreme humidity to Southern California that would last into the following week, potentially causing flooding.
Lewis said that it’s rare for tropical storms to make landfall in California. The last tropical storm to make landfall in the region was in 1939.
“However, several tropical systems have weakened below tropical storm strength before making landfall,” Lewis said. “Most recently, Hilary brought significant rainfall and impacts to Southern California in August 2023. Hilary was not a tropical storm by the time it reached California
