“The practice of āsana brings the body to a state of stability, gives freedom from disease, and brings lightness to one’s very being.” H.P I, 17

Here are a few of the ways one might work with shoulder and neck issues in various supported asana. Which of these do you find most challenging? Let us know in the comments and we’ll share some thoughts in a video! 👇

We explored our nervous system responses while doing hard things this weekend! Iyengar yoga is so rich in precision and depth that it makes challenging things accessible. Yoga truly is for all, and we’re grateful for our excellent teachers for illuminating the path.

Here we’re working on Eka hasta bhujasana (can you spot Julia - Iyengar Yoga + Massage with her tongue out?😝). It’s a fact that doing so makes the asana easier. Or so she says.

Then we explored Akarna Dhanurasana, archer’s pose or “to the ear bow pose”, where you gracefully pull back and extend the leg like trained archer discharging an arrow. “Shoot the arrow “ as 𝑺𝒌𝒚𝒍𝒆𝒓 𝑪𝒉𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒆𝒏 says ✨🙏👏

Sometimes you just need a little assist to do something you’ve never done before! 💪🙏✨
This weekend Brian got his handstand 👏 We love to see it! As always, practice under the guidance of a competent teacher. We absolutely loved the workshops with the Community Yoga - Lisa Waas community under excellent teaching from 𝑺𝒌𝒚𝒍𝒆𝒓 𝑪𝒉𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒆𝒏 and can’t wait for next time!

As we head home from nearly 100 miles of hiking in the Alps, I’m reflecting on all the ways in which I practiced yoga on this trip. It wasn’t just the recuperative asana I practiced each evening and morning. It was also the way many of the Yama & Niyama wove into each day. It was in the way I applied my willpower when I really didn’t want to continue (tapas). In the way that I accepted my own limitations, and opted for a few “shortcuts” when my body was really hurting (ahimsa, satya, brahmcharya). In the way I worked through and let go of negative thought patterns that cropped up when I felt defeated (svadhyaya, aparigraha). In the way I practiced being with what is, and accepting the moment, especially when it was unpleasant (santosha). The human body and mind are incredible. I’ll be grateful to be home for some R&R shortly, before returning to teaching. Come see me this week to practice lots of Tadasana & Savasana!! 😆✨🙏

Props have a porpoise. 🐬 Er, I mean - purpose. 🤓
This morning we explored staying longer & with more ease in standing asana using head support and the wall. Not every practice is like this, but they’re important. Today I chose this way because my neck is angry, and my brilliant teachers showed me these modifications. The wall support provides steadiness. The chair allows the neck, face & brain to relax. The rope aids in rotating the torso & expanding the chest.

Practice under the guidance of competent teachers, and stay curious! ❤️✨🙏

We love seeing our Yoga Shed community enjoying their practice in nature! Brian recently went to Puerto Rico to pick up his new surfboard from a local shaper Here he’s enjoying a little meditation by the water after a hike ❤️✨
