Did you know horses can get sunburnt???
The sun is finally here in Ohio and we are getting our horses use to the pastures and sun!!
Yes, horses get sunburned. It primarily affects areas with pink skin and thin hair (like the muzzle, white face markings, and around the eyes). Breeds like Paints, Appaloosas, and Cremellos are the most susceptible.
Here are some preventative tips-
1. Adjust Turnout Schedules-keep susceptible horses stabled or in a shaded area during peak UV hours (typically 10 AM to 4 PM). Turn them out overnight instead.
2. Use Protective Gear
Full-face fly masks: Choose extended masks that feature built-in UV protection and a nose flap to shield sensitive areas.
UV-treated sheets: For horses with thin coats or white patches on their backs, lightweight, UV-reflective fly sheets provide great coverage.
3. Apply Sunscreen
What to use: High-SPF human sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) or equine-specific sunblocks work well. Zinc oxide formulas (like diaper rash cream) are particularly effective because they act as thick physical blockers. Apply 15-30 minutes prior to sun exposure and re-apply every 2 hours.
4. Check Your Pastures-
Watch out for certain toxic weeds (like Alsike or white clover) that can trigger a much more severe condition called photosensitization. This makes unpigmented skin hypersensitive to UV rays, even causing blistering on white leg markings.

The fuel saga continues……
With Ohio diesel prices hitting record highs over $5.90 a gallon, fueling up has turned into an extreme sport 🧗♀️
You have to shake that nozzle, squeeze the trigger, and tap it like a stubborn ketchup bottle to get every last golden drop. Shout out to Kroger for saving the day with that 20 cents off!

Holly Hillyer and Hot Gurl Summer got their first WIN in the trail and huge improvements in all their classes 🙌🙌

Addison Leonard and I Can’t Feel My Face got a WIN in the pleasure, picked up points in the horsemanship and equ along with Reserve Grand Champion gelding 🤩
Lilianna Sanna and I’m Gonna Be Lazy smoked it! Winning High Point Rookie Youth and Reserve High Point 13 and under, getting wins in the pleasure and equ! 🔥🔥
Emily Leto and Vinndicated debuted with a great show, winning the equ under all 4 and snagging L1 am w/t high point!! 🍾🍾
Peyton Tebben and KM Don’t Flash Me had another amazing show! Lots of great rides, wins and taking home Small Fry and Level 1 youth w/t high point 🦄🦄
Rylee Jordan and her 3 yr old RWS High Rollin Remnic (Sq**rt) debuted in the ranch rail. No placings but this great minded baby was so good for his first time showing! 🤠🤠

Happy Memorial Day! May we mourn, remember and honor the U.S. military personnel who died while serving the armed forces.
Blessed to have our riders carry the flag during YEDA - Youth Equestrian Development Association, Inc competitions over the years. Concord Equestrian Center will be honored to carry it again at the upcoming Nationals.
