Many knew Simon Barnes as the first Black pharmacist in Delray Beach and owner of Fifth Avenue Pharmacy, which he operated with his wife Florence Barnes for 49 years. Did you know, however, Dr. Barnes was also an inventor? He developed a product called Ultra-Pep, a conditioning multi-vitamin that was designed to help athletes with energy and stamina.

Some moments capture more than a photograph. They capture a community moving forward. 📸

In November 1956, Frances J. Bright and Catherine Strong stood together at the dedication of the Pompey Park pool in Delray Beach.

Nearly 70 years later, this image offers a glimpse into the people, places and milestones that helped shape our community. Preserving photographs like this means preserving the stories behind them, so future generations can understand the history that happened right here in Delray Beach.

Do you remember the Pompey Park pool, or have a family story connected to Pompey Park? We’d love to hear it in the comments.

It began as Solomon D. Spady’s home. Today, it holds the stories of a community. 🖤

Built in 1926, the Spady House was home to Solomon D. Spady, a respected educator and community leader whose impact helped shape generations in Delray Beach.

One hundred years later, his home still stands. But today, its walls hold far more than one family’s story. They hold the photographs, memories, voices and experiences of generations of Black families whose lives helped shape our community.

That is what we are asking you to help preserve.

There is still time to make a gift to our “The House Still Stands” Centennial campaign and help us reach goal.

Give $8. Give $28. Give $100. Give whatever you can. Every gift helps ensure these stories have a home for the next generation.

The House Still Stands. Help us keep the history inside it alive.
