Fall evenings on Maryland’s Eastern Shore can be a great time to fish from a kayak: cooler water, less boat traffic, and the possibility of an evening bite. The shorter days simply make preparation more important.
Visibility comes first. A 360-degree white light visible from all directions is required on a kayak at night. A headlamp or low-profile deck light also makes it much easier to manage tackle, land a fish, and find gear without fumbling in the dark.
Before launching, start with familiar water and check the moon phase, tides, current, and wind. Charge and test your fish finder and GPS while it’s still light. Pack spare batteries, a charged backup headlamp, a whistle, and your phone in a dry bag. Always tell someone your launch location, route, and expected return time.
