Grief has no sense of time.
I keep telling my heart youāre gone.
It keeps asking,
for how long?
-
Time is often spoken about as though it changes grief.
As though enough days, months or years can somehow
alter the reality of what has happened.
But grief doesn't experience time the way the rest
of the world does.
The world counts forward.
Grief counts without.
Time doesn't move grief away from the person we love.
It simply increases the amount of time they have been gone.
That is the reality grief lives with.
The calendar tells us how long it has been since they died.
Our hearts only know how long it has been since they were here.
There is a profound difference between those two things.
One measures time.
The other measures absence.
Perhaps that's why grief can feel so timeless. Because our hearts aren't trying to calculate years. They're trying to understand a forever that doesn't make sense.
We keep telling our hearts you're gone.
It keeps asking,
"For how long?"
