Did you know… how Philippe Petit rigged his wire between the World Trade Center Towers? Philippe first saw the plans for the World Trade Center when he was 18 years old, before it was even built. For the next 6 years, he studied the Towers, their construction, wind conditions, Tower security, and designed the rigging for what he called "le coup." He found an inside person who got him and his team fake ID badges for the World Trade Center and little by little brought his rigging up and hid it on the roof amongst the construction materials. Then on August 6, 1974, Petit and his accomplices snuck up to the top of both towers and waited.
As dawn broke on August 7, they had fired a harpoon across the towers with a fishing line that was then used to pull a rope across, and ultimately the 440-pound cable that was rigged 1,350 feet above the New York City streets below. Philippe then stepped out on the wire. He spent about 45 minutes performing a variety of tricks on the wire and ignoring the police who yelled at him and shook the wire in a vain attempt to make him get off.
Petit had done clandestine walks between the towers of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris in 1971 and of Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1973. But the World Trade Center walk got him a contract with Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus and the distinction of being named Artist in Residence at St. John the Divine Cathedral on the upper west side.
When Petit did finally step off the wire and back onto the World Trade Center roof, he was instantly arrested and also famous. He was also sent to a mental hospital to be evaluated. Ultimately, a NYC judge sentenced him to doing a free show in Central Park for the City’s children. Movies and books have been written about this aerial exploit. The best of them may well be Petit’s own “To Reach the Clouds.” Philippe Petit was an aerial poet who always saw himself as a performing artist rather than a daredevil.
The morning the Towers came down on 9/11, Philippe was quoted as saying that at that moment, "My towers became our towers. I saw them collapse – hurling, crushing thousands of lives..” When asked how the destruction of the Towers affected him, he said, “How can I answer that question when on the other side of that event you have thousands of lives that were lost? He said. You cannot compare losing a marvel of architecture and losing human lives."
Photo by Jim R. Moore. Moore was instrumental in helping make the walk happen and the primary person who documented the auspicious aerial event.
