Wait until this fall gator gets right up to the lens! 🐊 One giant Midwest river pike, thirteen seconds of slow-mo, and the topwater bite is officially ON.

Autumn on the Midwest rivers means one thing: big, hungry pike feeding up aggressively before winter sets in.

This monster came from a quiet stretch of river. The morning air was crisp, the water was calm, and everything looked asleep. But under the surface, a giant was waiting in ambush. One long cast put a Whopper Plopper 110 right along the cover, and the moment it started splashing, the surface exploded. The rod loaded up instantly, and it felt like I had hooked a runaway tank.

Pushing around 40 inches (estimated), this northern pike used every bit of the river current against me. Hard runs, deep dives, and last-second surges right next to the kayak, with the drag screaming the whole time. One slip on the line or one bad move with the net, and it would have been over.

Kayak fishing changes the whole game. You sit just inches above the water, with no bank to walk and no room to back up. Every headshake and every dive has to be handled right at the hull. Inch by inch I worked this beast toward the kayak, praying the hooks would hold. This close-up shows you exactly what a fall river monster looks like. 🐊

WHY FALL PIKE HIT TOPWATER:
As the water cools in autumn, pike feed heavily and sit in ambush along cover, waiting for an easy meal. The rotating tail of a Whopper Plopper throws a loud, steady splash and gurgle across the surface, which triggers violent reaction strikes. It is one of the most exciting ways to fish, because you see the whole strike happen on top of the water.

The fall bite is officially here, and these river monsters are not holding back! As soon as my spinnerbait hit the water, this giant river smallmouth bass smashed it and the fight was on. When you are kayak fishing in the current, a fish that pulls this hard turns everything into pure chaos! I finally got it in the net and couldn't believe the absolute size and the stunning autumn colors on this fall monster.

I always thought sauger were rare around here. Then I caught my second one in a week or two.

This one came on the very first cast of the morning. Cold air, calm river, and I put my ChatterBait right next to a fallen tree on the bank. The fish hit it hard and went straight to the bottom. I could feel right away that it was a big one.

About 20 inches, caught from the kayak, and released like always. Looks like there are just a lot of them here.

I need the Midwest fishing community to help me out! 🤔 I was battling some heavy river current in my Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120, and instead of my usual bass action, I pulled up this absolute mystery.

This is only my second time ever catching this river species. My first one was called a Sauger by an awesome viewer, but I always assumed it was a Walleye. Now I am completely stumped!

The fall transition is finally here, and it brings out the true river monsters! If you know, you know – autumn fishing is on another level. I took the kayak out looking for some aggressive smallmouth bass, and the action was absolutely explosive from the moment I hit the water.

It only took one perfect cast with the spinnerbait before this absolute tank smashed it right at the boat. The aggressive strike, the chaos of fighting a heavy smallie from a kayak, and those beautiful fall colors make this the absolute best time of the year to be out here. There is nothing quite like the adrenaline rush of a big river bass hammering your lure.
