Arvada’s APEX Skatepark is a tribute to local skateboarding pioneer Dave Tuck (1969–2013) and his wife, Emily. Their dedication to community advocacy and efforts in city council helped bring this world-class facility to life. Tuck, who was affectionately known as the “Mayor of Arvada,” envisioned a top-tier skatepark for local youth, transforming an empty site near the Apex Center into a premier hub for skateboarding in Colorado.

When construction began, Tuck was undergoing treatment for a terminal illness. Despite his health challenges, he regularly joined the Team Pain crew on-site, working directly on the concrete builds and personally hand-setting pool coping to ensure the facility met the highest standards for future generations.

The park features custom details that reflect Tuck’s personal history, including the Hangar bowl, which is modeled after an iconic indoor wooden bowl from the 1990s that he skated in Charleston, South Carolina. Additionally, a heart tile mosaic is embedded into the deck. Today, APEX Skatepark is one of Colorado’s top skate destinations, serving as both a vital community space and a lasting tribute to Tuck’s enduring legacy.

Rest in peace, Dave. Thank you for dedicating your life to Colorado skateboarding.

Ever wondered how your local skatepark got its name?

I researched the origins of every skatepark in Colorado.

The names cover everything from geographic landmarks and subdivision developments to historical figures and community memorials.

The ones that grabbed my attention the most were a handful of parks named after the people who fought, built, and grinded to bring those skateparks to life.

Over the next few weeks, I will be sharing the stories of a few of these legendary individuals and the parks that they helped to build

After that we dive into all the parks named after people and families outside of the skate community

We will finish up with the rest of the skateparks, the ones named after geography, neighborhoods, or something else.
