A Letter to Jeff:

Dear Friend,

We both know that standing on a podium would make this momentous occasion sweeter, but we both know that is never the point of it at all. Your sixth finish of the in the middle of the night, with no fans screaming your name, but surrounded by people who love you and who have supported you throughout this incredible journey yet again. In a way, I know that’s much more your preference, you don’t do it for the cheers.

What an honor it has been to follow your comeback from a challenging first day of being so ill so finishing at the head of the pack. You personify what it means to have grit, over and over again. It seems as though people just know you’ll pull through any challenge regardless of if it’s pitfalls. When you all your cylinders are firing you are an unstoppable force not just in the sport you’ve come to love but in life. It’s such a privilege to have one of my best friends also be one of my biggest inspirations. I’m am so proud of you and the things you have so painfully and willingly put yourself through to become the man and athlete so many of us get to experience as we watch.

250 miles in 69 hours. 8 minutes of sleep and never once treating the people around you with anything but kindness and gratitude. Above all your other incredible character traits these are the two that make you unique. Sure the spotlight might shine on you at times, and rightly so, but you always remember the people who care enough to show up.

I hope you sleep well today and see your fiancé finish her race soon too. With her head held high knowing that you have the Cocodona FKT for any couple ever running the race. At least I think. Keep Going… always.
