If you’ve got the basics down, it’s time to add a few more words to your climbing vocabulary 🧗‍♀️

Here are 5 intermediate climbing terms you’ll want to know:

🔒Lock-off: bend your arm and hold your body in place while reaching with the other hand.

🪑Layback: pull against a hold with an almost straight arm while pushing your feet in the opposite direction.

🤚Hand jam: wedge your hand into a crack, twist it into place, and use it to pull yourself up.

🦶Smear: use the rubber on the bottom of your climbing shoe against the wall instead of standing on an actual hold.

🙌Gaston: pull outward on a hold while pushing your body in the opposite direction - basically like opening an elevator door.

Save this for your next session and see how many you can spot on the wall 👀

This is Jared, and these are his best tips to level up 🧗

Meet Jared, our Lincoln Park Climbing Program Manager! 👋 He’s been climbing for 9 years, but he told us if he were to do it all over again, this would be his best advice for quick skill progression.

Fun fact: he’s sent three V9s in his climbing career and in his own words: “...they were all soft.” 😌🐐

Having trouble with your heel hooks or high steps? Here’s a few yoga moves that can help you climb them better.🧘‍♀️🧗👇

Hips close to the wall 👉 Seated Wide-Legged Forward Fold: works on hip and inner-thigh flexibility to help you open up your range of motion.

Wide heel hooks 👉 Reverse Warrior: helps improve hip mobility and external rotation.

Tight heel hooks 👉 Lizard: helps build mobility through the hips while opening the hip flexors and inner thighs.

High steps 👉 Warrior 1 → Warrior 3: High steps don’t just require flexibility - you also need strength and power through your leading leg. Flowing through Warrior 1 to Warrior 3 can be a great addition to your workout to build hip mobility, single-leg strength, balance, and control.

Check out one of our yoga classes at your nearest Movement! Our instructors have got you covered and are always happy to share tips to help you level up your flexibility and flow game so you can send those climbs. 🧘‍♀️🧗
