What is profile milling? Sometimes, asphalt surfaces deteriorate, but the base is in good condition. Removing the top layer through profile milling or grinding removes irregularities and creates a surface that can be used as-is or coated with a minimum of asphalt material.

Mindful of the environment, we use recycled asphalt regularly. Most of the asphalt we install is Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement Mix, made up of older removed asphalt blacktop mixed with aggregate and new asphalt binder.

To make Warm Mix Asphalt, WMA, additives like wax or water are mixed with the binder to make it mix at a lower temperature. The advantage is that it can be laid at a lower temperature, meaning it can be used sooner.

In the early 1800s, John McAdam engineered a high-quality road using broken stone, “which shall unite by its own angles so as to form a hard surface.” To reduce dust and improve longevity, the stone was coated with hot tar to create a “tarmacadam” surface.

In a joint report to Congress, the Federal Highway Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency estimated that more than 73 million tons of asphalt paving material was recycled in 1992. Recycling roads not only conserves natural resources, it also saves American taxpayers more than $300 million each year.

Driveway paving is a chore best left to professionals. The key component, the asphalt, must be at the proper temperature in order to achieve the best results. If it is too cold, it will not compact properly. If it is too hot, it will not set correctly.
