DENVER ARSENAL TRAINING SESSION
Focus:
In this session we discussed the importance of movement off the ball, quick transitions, and combining individual with collective action to accomplish our goals.
PART 1: Combination Passing Drill. (30 Minutes) This warm up drill allows players to work on their passing, movement off the ball, game rhythm, communication, and conditioning. It is important not to stop the drill even when mistakes are made. Simply correct as you go. Players need to understand how to receive instructions while playing. As a coach, if your style of play is possession, rhythm is key to successfully move the ball around.
PART 2: Counter Attack Transitions. (30 min) This drill starts with a 1v1 and each turnover should be a counter attack. Every excersice or drill should lead towards game application; this drill allows players to have real game-like scenarios. From 1v1s to constant transition between attack and defense.
OFFENSIVE FOCUS: Forward passes, quickness, create chaos, be direct on to goal.
DEFENSIVE FOCUS: dropping back quickly, maintain order, cut the play to buy time to reorganize in case we are caught disorganized.
PART 3: Scrimmage. It is important that players apply what you practiced. Do not give any more instructions. Simply ask that they apply what you practiced during that session, into the scrimmage. Players need to think on their own and make mistakes and this is the place to make them. Push them to think on their own. I sometimes join them during scrimmage. It helps me make sure that they are still playing with intensity and I can show them what it looks like when you apply everything we’ve been working on without having to keep giving instructions.

Coaching tips: 💡
-Always start by letting players know WHAT they will be learning today.
-Set up simple drills that will make understanding today’s lesson easy to understand.
-Simple instruction. Keep your instructions simple, direct and clear. Sometimes too much information can overwhelm players and they can end up learning nothing.
-Repetition. Constant repetition will help players start using the tools you give them naturally.
-Ask questions. Always ask your players questions to ensure that they understand what you are teaching them.
-Allow them to make mistakes. Have them make mistakes in practice, where there is space and time to make corrections.
